The bold is the key. So, the bottom line is that existing customers can do this upgrade ourselves. (Whether Dish will allow that is another thing entirely, but it is technically possible.)

I'm not sure the HWS has a 3.0 port so I don't think it is required.
That’s kind of like asking what do Joeys need a Hopper for. The hopper plus is what runs the whole thing
The only thing I can go by is what Dish Network is telling us, the technicians, and that’s that the software cannot be downloaded off the satellites.
Exactly, the very first step in the whole process is to make sure that the hoppers connected to the Internet and that bridging is enabled. If there’s no Internet then nothing else is going to happen, Although, now that I think about it, there is a process to trigger an Internet download. Which I completely forgot about but I don’t think it’s something that the general public knows about.
In fact, the entire process is to make sure the hopper is on the newest software, make sure it’s connected to the Internet, make sure bridging is enabled, the hopper is activated along with the Joeys, Install the Hopper plus which will prompt you to move the HDMI cable from the hopper and south to the plus, and then you trigger the Internet download which is actually two separate downloads and when that is done, it will reboot to the android TV screen where you sign into your Google account.
Are you telling me the Joeys can't directly run any app whatsoever?
I get conflicting stories. One side says that the new Joeys will work as regular Joeys without a hopper plus, the other side says that the only apps still have our part of the android TV. At this point I don’t wanna say anything definitive until I’ve actually gone through the process
Nope they all run on their own. You don’t need a Hopper Plus for the Joeys to work.
The are pushing the Hopper Plus with Joeys for new customers so they have the same interface and abilities on all the TV’s.
Existing clusters MAY be able to get the android platform without having to get a Hopper Plus as some folks with a Hopper 3 don’t want to lose multiview which is not available on the Hopper plus.
This is a question I have had for awhile. I understand that the Hopper needs to be activated for the initial installation of the Hopper+. My question is: If I then deactivate my purchased Hopper 3, will the Hopper+ continue to work for any apps that are installed? The built-in Hopper apps continue to work even when the receiver is deactivated. This should be the same for the Google Play apps.
Okay, so this also raises the possibility that the new Joey 4's by themselves will work as an upgrade for a Hopper Duo or Hopper 1 system. I wouldn't want to see a Hopper 1 try to run a Joey 4, but it sounds like it may technically be possible. This way, at least one TV in the house could have the new Android interface, without needing to replace the Hopper. This is especially important since Hopper Duo has a lower monthly DVR fee. Some Hopper 1 customers may also be grandfathered at a lower rate for the DVR fee, and may not want to lose that rate.
Are they still advertising multiview as an available feature to new customers? I suppose to avoid confusion, Dish could really start pushing Hopper 2's to new customers, since that model doesn't have multiview to begin with.
Is losing multiview a permanent thing or will it be resolved?
I forgot that Scott already explained elsewhere that the built-in Sling functionality is also required for the Android interface to work. Neither Hopper 1 nor Hopper Duo have that, so that may rule out Android on the new Joey 4's. If the Joey 4's still work as regular Joeys without Android, though, they may still be a 4K client that could be paired with these Hopper models.
I think the Joey 4s will work both as a Joey and with Android features without a Hopper+ provided the Hopper 2 or 3 has the provided software on it.
True, I was just thinking about other customers with those cheaper Hopper models. (Hopper Duo and Hopper 1) I don't think they can download the Android software, so I was wondering what would happen if someone tried to use a Joey 4 with one of those.
Customers? Regardless, I love this prospect since I wanted to add a J4 to my H3/J3 combination and connect it to my 4K TV in the basement. I do not care if it has a different GUI. I could also play with the wireless dongle pattykay gave me in the remote past which I promised to test out on the J3 but never did.
Nope it requires the Hopper to be activated to continue working.
