Which is the better console?

From reading various articles and reviews:

Xbox ONE: Superior multimedia machine, Kinect enabled, no Blu Ray 3D support, more games

PS4: More powerful machine, better game graphics/visuals. smaller in size, no power "brick", cheaper compared to X1

Thoughts?

There is no "Better" machine. It depends on what you want in a console. If you want a system that is basically just a game machine, you get a PS4. If you want something that will integrate with your home system and allow for more features outside of just a gaming system, get a Xbone.

Or, if you want my opinion, all the "next gen" systems suck in their current form. They're too buggy and/or they don't have enough games available. There's no reason to not wait for a price drop IMO.

I have both and I prefer the PS4 so far. It's slightly more powerful for gaming but I don't think you will actually notice a difference. The biggest difference is speed. Both systems claim to be able to play games after a partial install. The game will continue to install in the background while you are playing. I have found this to be true for PS4. I can put a retail disk in for the first time and be playing within 5 minutes. In my experience it's closer to 45 minutes for the XBOX One. Load times after the initial install seem to be faster on the PS4 too. That can vary from game to game though. I have had PS4 games do partial downloads and installs in less time than it took me to install Dead Rising 3 from a retail disk. Once everything is installed you won't see much difference but I just prefer the way the PS4 works and I think it has a better UI.

I keep seeing people say the PS4 is just a game machine and the XBOX One is the multimedia box too. I think that's only partially true. Out side of the cable/satellite box integration the PS4 can do just about anything the XBOX can do. It's a great bluray player and it has most of the big streaming apps. The only notable exception I have seen is HBO Go. I still prefer my Apple TV for streaming over either of these console though.

I would put it this way. If you are deciding between these two consoles the most important thing to consider is which companies exclusive franchisees you like better. If you don't really care about either than think about whether you would use the TV integration and Kinect features. If you want that than get the Xbox. If you don't care about that than save the $100 and get the PS4.

If I was in any way thinking of spending $100 more to get an Xbone, I would 1) make sure my TV service would integrate properly and seamlessly in a way that I would get added value from the experience; 2) Compare the features and benefits of the Xbox Live Gold vs. PS Plus service to see which one is best for me--that's assuming all else being equal as far as exclusives I'm interested in and the system most of my friends have.

Also note, if you are planning on buying a next-gen console this month, and it's an important feature to you, currently the PS4 does not allow any form of music/MP3 playback from CDs, LAN streaming, or external drive, and there are no assurances it will ever be added, as referenced by riffjim above. The Sony CEO has responded to the numerous complaints only by saying "we'll look into it."

To be fair, the Xbone is missing a number of features as well, and it also doesn't have external drive support. At least the HDD in the PS4 can be easily removed and upgraded.

Star Trek the Video game really stinks!

China lifts 14 year old console ban.
