Another site references a "trade up" program for existing Premium users of $200.... but is still calling that a rumor.... April issue of Game Informer magazine will be the first official source to break the story....

I have a warranty through gamestop for a year , I have been having problems with frezzing , hope it holds out I will just take it back and pay the difference $79.

Im now out of warranty (life got busy when i called and got them to allow me to send it back for free, so now im SOL) ... machine works, but cant play chromehounds and rarely freezes on others (with CH cant play for more than a few minutes).

Looks like instead of paying whatever that fee is ($120?) I can pay a little more and just upgrade.... so hope that part is true

Ohh Look. A New Black Xbox 360

We've confirmed with trusted sources that the black Xbox 360 is indeed coming (the image above is of the original 360 dev kit, FYI), and will be dubbed the Xbox 360 Elite. Here's what you need to know about it:

The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.
The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.
Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.
Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.
We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.
Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.
Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.
The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360.
There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change).

Kinda lame still no WiFi built in, i just don't like the idea of sticking something infront of my 360, its kinda annoying looking at it T.T.
Heck id pay 500$ for it if that version had WiFi in it.

Only question I've got, why would it matter if you had a core or Premium system, to get HDMI upgrade? Hardware is the same in both. And as far as someone that bought a premium spent more money, not really, when the person that bought the core ended up buying all of the other accessories that comes with Premium. (HDD, Wireless controller, etc.) Like me, when I bought my first 360 about a year ago, I only bought a core. Later I bought a HDD, HD-AV adapter, and now wireless contoller. I spent the $100 difference between core and premium on just the HDD.

Really, not having WiFi built-in dont' bother me any, because I don't like wireless networks. I've got Cat5 cable ran to my 360 right now and it works perfectly, don't need wireless.

If the elite don't come with the new 65nm processor, then what was the point of re-vamping 360? At least, what would be the point of releasing the Elite before 65nm processor is available and included?

If you can buy skins for 360, then why is a black 360 so special? And even if black isn't an available skin, if you are any good with model paint, and your hands, you could always paint your 360 any color you wanted. Of course voiding your warranty, but really, I don't see the big deal about color. And before you say it, controllers could be painted too.

So really, HDMI is the only gain for $80 more than current premium. To me, IMO, that isn't worth it.

Rumors abound that the core will be phased out within the next few months. The Elite will become the equal of the Premium EXCEPT that the black limited edition version will go away and they will be white from then out....

It looks like Microsoft might have a heart and will possibly be including a data-retention cable with the new and improved, back-in-black Xbox 360 model. Ars Technica has a line on a secret source who lets it slip that Microsoft had sent a new SKU for the upgraded unit, which specifies that this cable will be included.


Additionally, the same source says that the cable will be included with the standalone 120GB HDD as well, which hasn't officially been announced yet. Will the cable and the HDD be available in both black and white? We don't want to mess up our precious gaming color scheme. We might see a rise of third-party HDD stickers and skins that'll let you dress that Xbox up in your love.

This will be a huge incentive towards getting existing Xbox owners to either upgrade their unit to the "Elite" model, or to buy the new drive, because no one wants to lose all their picture packs, arcade games, and episodes of Battlestar Galactica. We're just happy to know what we probably won't have to download that Eragon demo again. However, this sounds like one of those "use it once and you're done" items that'll soon be collecting dust in the back of a drawer somewhere, so look for 'em on eBay not long afterwards.

I don't know if the HDMI output is enough to compel me to upgrade right now, but I will definitely be grabbing the 120 GB upgrade drive ESPECIALLY if it has a data transfer cable....

This is a good idea...... Bring out the beefier unit right before all those Halo 2 players who have been dragging their feet finally have to get off the fence and buy the newer units to play Halo3 later this year (along with GTA4 and the other big titles slated for this year)

if it is making to much noise for you, take it back now. if you are going to wait for the new version to take it back, then you are indeed cheating costco.

i have also seen other theads where you make light of the costco return policy. i don't think you are fooling anyone.
