I recently contacted WRAL (Raleigh, NC) to find out if they planned to use their VHF channel for digital broadcasts when they turn off their analog signal. They kindly notified me that no, they would not be going back to using VHF channel 5, and that they would be using UHF channel 49. While they were at it, they offered to do a signal survey for me based on my address and provide me with a free antenna based on the results of the survey.

I have a ChannelMaster 4228 headed my way. However, I had already planned on installing a CM 3019 this weekend since WTVD (ABC) has said they will be using their VHF channel for digital in the future. Is there a way for me to use both the 3019 and the 4228 at the same time? WUNC (PBS) is in a much different direction than all the other HD stations I would like to receive on my HR10-250, and I was thinking perhaps I could use the 4228 to pick up the PBS signal and the 3019 for everything else. I just don't know how I would combine the signals.

Thanks,
Ted

Here are my results from antennaweb:

Unfortunately, I need VHF for ABC which is in the same direction as all other stations I want save for PBS. PBS will be on channel 25 long-term, so UHF is fine for them. Either way, thanks for the info on the amp.

Well, I got the 4228 today, and just to see how well it worked I hooked it up in my downstairs foyer. I was able to get the 4 major networks HD signal with no problem. Signal strength was anywhere from 60-85 depending on the channel according to my D* HR10-250. I think I will do very well with the 3019 mounted outside. Thanks to everyone on this forum who has provided me with excellent information both directly and indirectly.

Update:

The CM 3019 pulls in NBC, CBS, and FOX very well, but ABC comes and goes. It's transmitter is 1° North of everything else. When I change the orientation of the antenna to bring ABC in better, NBC disappears. Should 1° be enough to make a difference with the 3019? I was able to pull all 4 in just fine with the 4228 indoors on the first floor. I would have thought I would be able to get the same results with the 3019 outside. Right now, I am considering either replacing the 3019 with the 4228 outside, or trying to mount the 4228 in the attic, and taking down the 3019. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ted
