Another thing to consider with this -

If the OP is willing to break contract with E* to switch to D*, then there is no guarantee that he won't break contract with D* to go somewhere else. It costs D* several hundred dollars to get a new customer, when you include promos, rebates, installation, and equipment. They need you to remain a customer for a set length of time just to break even on what they give you.

I can also see why D* would pass on that offer as well.

That is just BS! He was willing to pay E* to get out just so he could pay D* to get in. No reasonable person on the Earth would not be moved by such passion and welcome this new member in:)

You D* fanboys are starting to make me sick, especially that I will soon be one of you guys. I can't believe I will be hanging out with you people soon:)

Congratulations! I haven't been spending much time in this part of the site lately, but I'm glad to see you finally got it worked out to make the switch!

By they way, you don't have to become a fanboy, just because you switched... ;)

I never said I want to be a fanboy but I am still sick to the stomach:)

If he was telling them that he was going to pay to get out of a contract then that tells DirecTv that he would pay to get out of a contract with them as well if he wanted to cancel service early. That early termination fee is supposed to cover their loss on signing you up as a subscriber if you leave before your commitment is up.

So DirecTv is supposed to be bought out and Dish Network is looked to be bought as well by AT&T possibly in the future. I've heard bad things about both of these companies and what would happen if they were bought out. I sure hope they both dont get bought out and get screwed up by their new owners. It would not leave a good alternative service to go with for those out in the country and many others would be stuck going back to cable.

Liberty Media already has an agreement with News Corp to buy D* it is supposed to be waiting for Gov't approval but it was also expected to close last fall.

And lastly, if you call back and play the CSR roulette game you might have better luck. Unfortunately not all CSRs give out the same deal. Also, when you call and the automated voice starts asking for you to choose who you want to talk to, say "retention." That department is usually the best place for getting good deals.
Even for returning customers?

The deal is to swap assets and cash for a controlling interest, not the entire company. D* will always be a publicly traded company unless another company like AT&T or DISH buys them out.

News Corp. does NOT own DIRECTV and it should never be suggested that they do. The same will apply to Liberty Media.

However, I subscribe to center ice, which I paid $160. I was willing to eat E*s cost on this, but asked if D* can prorate the package for me as the season is close to 2/3rd over (i'm not going to pay another $160 for 30 games).
D* site now says you can get the remaining CI for 4 payments of $29.75, which they say is $50 off the full season price. Offer ends March 7th.

DIRECTV: DIRECTV - NHL® CENTER ICE®

Fanboys i love when people think they should get something for free or a reduced price whenever they want. But in reality when that dosent happen they start calling everyone else with common sense about this names makes me laugh. Ill try anything to get credits or discounts but when it dosent work just move on with it.

So direct is changing ownership, when do you anticipate this may happen and what is the pedigree on the new owner ?

Liberty Media's acquisition of News Corp's DIRECTV holdings is a well documented deal. It has been going on for quite a while now.

Here's a report of an imminent completion of the deal from December 2006: News Corp-Liberty Media DIRECTV Share Swap Nearly Complete - Seeking Alpha

The deal is doubly enticing for News Corp as it allows them to get back Liberty's $11 billion holding (19%) in News Corp and Rupert gets rid of his "turd bird".

Here we go again on one of my many pet peeves.

Harshness, I defy you to find one "reputable source" for your turd bird quote.

It first appeared in an article by Jill Goldsmith in Variety (not exactly the Wall Street Journal in terms of accuracy if you know what I mean). Since then, the phrase has been repeated fairly frequently, but never in any reputable publication of which I am aware.

I don't believe Rupert ever said (or wrote) it. He's too good a businessman to do something like that.

The more often things like this get repeated, the more seeming validity they seem to have

Prove me wrong!

Ive decided to stay with E* now, even with the lack of programming. I called D* 3 seperate times. Once put on hold for 20mins, another time the line got disconnected, and the last resulted in this thread. It doesnt feel right to move now.

The final straw was this weekend at my in-laws. They have D*. I was using the DVR and got so frustrated using the thing. It's slow, clunky, and just plain bad. I think switching would be a mistake.

It's true that they are slower for whatever reason. I have both a HR20-700 and HR20-100.....pretty much the same but one of the first things you notice when you switch from E* to D* is that the response is slower. I agree also that the D* units are 'clunky' compared to E*'s 622. The way favorites are organized and implemented, the guide info and presentation, no autotune, DVR recording, etc.

But.....they are not 'bad' IMO. They are very functional and after living with the D* HD DVRs for a few months I don't feel at all like they poor products. Just need to give E* credit for excellent design (except that the 622 doesn't do stop motion, frame-by-frame advance well....D* wins here). Though the TV2 concept is becoming long in the tooth....TV2 is a bad connection for the 622. You really do need two separate HD DVRs if you care about PQ.

Regarding programming, E* doesn't do CI nearly as well as D*, E* doesn't carry EI, and E* doesn't have the HD programming that D* has. When the programming comparisons are relatively even then the equipment is important but when E* isn't competitive programming-wise then the equipment takes a back seat.

Such a source has not come forward.

I'm not saying that he did, but do you think that a writer for Variety would have come up with that expression on her own? The terminology that Ms. Goldsmith used was "supposedly dubbed" as opposed to "called" or "labeled", so she wasn't making a direct quote anyway.

In the final analysis, does it really matter whether he said it or not?

I guess the question is whether or not this is a win-win for News Corporation or just a simple buy-back. I'm inclined to believe that DIRECTV didn't really fit in with News Corp's future plans.

Of course I do, you don't believe everything that you read in print (or see & hear on TV or hear over the radio) do you?

You (and others like you) have promulgated this crap for quite a while now without even bothering to check the truthfulness of it.

Variety, and other publications of it's ilk, are in the business of selling their product and sensational comments sell, whether they are true or not.

Ask Dan Rather if you don't believe me!
