as long as it has a clear view of the southern sky. My dad does not want the dish on the house he said it wont put it on the house, but he said he would put it on the deck like attached to the side of the wooden post of the deck or something..We won't be getting D* if its has to be on the house...would te installer use any special brackets i might purchase? any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks guys..

The installation starts at the ground bond...........that is where the prewireed house lines (if any) should be.
Then you start looking for line of sight (LOS). The dish goes on the building close to the ground bond.
Bolting into the roof is to be avoided and bolting into siding and stud walls is a no no. I put most on the truss end at the corner of the building.

Bolting to a deck is fine. Use the band board and not the railing.

Finally a steel pole and concrete is possible but there is an extra charge.......you have to dig in as many as four cables. Lawn mowers and weed eaters ding ground mounts but they are easy to service.

Show the tech where you would like it. That is why they have the word consensus in the book. Some spots just will never work. The tech has to live with the design he installs. If it gives problems they will somehow hit his pay. It is your house. You are the DTV customer. Some spots are easier than others........prepare to pay for designs that use up lots of cable and time.

so the installer would dig a hole with concrete? What is the band board of the deck? oh and I ave a SWM LNB so there wont be four lines..

Almost all Primestar dishes went on a pole with 2 bags of concrete. The big advantage to DTV was the little dish that could be bolted to a structure. As we look at the 5 LNB we are back where we started.

The closer the pole goes to the building the better chance of hitting UG stuff like phone, gas and water systems including irrigation. I have ended up putting the Ka/Ku dishes on poles just because there was nothing strong enough to bolt into. They don't make shacks and trailers like they used to.

oh ok cool..one more question what is the band board of the deck?

That's the horizontal board that is below the deck. It goes all the way around the deck. BTW, they won't install on a pole for free if the dish can be installed somewhere else. It would cost about $70-100 if you have to pay for it. Also, you can attach the dish to any sturdy part of the deck, even if it isn't plumb, as long as the base of the dish is able to be fully attached. The pole itself does have to be plumb, of course.

DTV Install

I am an installer for ironwood comm. Yes we carry concrete on our trucks. We also have a rail mount system that we use on decks and balconies. We use these alot in apartments. However, this rail mount system is only going to be as strong as the rail we attach it to. I would suggest going with a pole mount. If done right, it's solid, out of the way, and less of an eye sore as it can go anywhere...as long as there is line of site. There is usually a charge for doing the pole mount. We charge $75. This price covers the cost of the pole, the concrete, the installation of the pole, and the first 25 feet of trenching the cable. Hope this info helps.

Some guys will carry everything necessary. I would get some fast setting concrete if I were you. Usaully runs 6-8 dollars a bag, but it dries in 30-45 minutes. I have seen many of the guys drive poles in with no cement and if they do you will have problems with it moving.

Those things are recent issue.......haven't seen one but I read. You still need one line for each receiver....dig now or dig later.

SWM LNB tech data is not in ant site I check for that stuff. Grrr!
