What is wrong with the Cleveland Indians?

HD's Weekend Recap, Meatloaf Style: "Two out of 3 aint bad."

-Friday, July 3rd: The Tribe clobbered the A's in the battle of the two bottom dwellers, 15-3. The Player of the Game honors have to go to Shin-Soo Choo who hit his 11th and 12th home runs of the season and set a career-high with seven RBIs in the win.

I know it was only one outing and it came in a blowout, but it was nice to see Chris Perez bounce back Friday after his disastrous opening act earlier in the week.

-On July 4th, my Goombah, C-Pav was stellar. He worked 6.2 commendable innings in route to a 5-2 Indian victory. Tony Sipp and Joe Smith provided a solid bridge to Kerry Wood who recorded a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save. I personally witnessed the firework display coming from Jacob's Field from a nearby beach off the shore of Lake Erie.

-During Saturday night’s game, Ben Francisco went 3-3 with a home run and two RBI. Ryan Garko had four hits over the weekend as well. Good to see the ol' SoCal buddies have a good weekend.

-Sunday, the last game of the series between the A's featured two pitchers of different sorts. Reigning Cy Younger Cliff Lee vs. Gio Gonzalez who was searching for his first win of the season. With a win, the Indians would've earned their 2nd sweep of the season. Wouldn't you know it though, the same ol' crap happened. NO RUN SUPPORT FOR CLIFFY and the Tribe lose (5-2)!

-Update from the Land of Misfits, aka "the weak, wounded and lost": Rafel Betancourt pitched a scoreless inning of work in Columbus yesterday to start his rehab assignment. In the strange but true category, the game was started by Fausto Carmona who went five innings, giving up one run on six hits, striking out five, and walking one. Betancourt followed. The last three innings were pitched by Jensen Lewis (two) and Masa Kobayashi (one). All four were mainstays in the Tribe opening day pitching staff.

To me, this decision means that they've given up on the season. Why delay the inevitable? It's clear this team is being lead by a lame duck coach. Maybe if they just get it done with and fire Wedgie already, some of these guys can relax a bit instead of pressing to try and save their coaches job.

For instance, last year, everyone in the clubhouse knew Sabathia wouldn't be resigned and '08 would be his last season as an Indian. The team pressed at the beginning of the year and it was clear there was a mental distraction by the Big Fella's future looming over the club's conscious. Then he was traded and the Indians played the best baseball in the MLB in the 2nd half of the season. There's no other excuse to explain this phenomenon except to conclude that the team was distracted. I think the same thing might be part of the problem this year...

Great post. I think you hit it on the head. If it were my club, Wedge would have never seen June.

Note to Wedgie: Yank Sowers After 5, you Bafoon!!!!!

Why is Jeremy Sowers allowed to pitch past the 5th inning? Why hasn't that moron of a coach figured out this trend by now?

In 11 starts, dude has only gotten past the 6th inning ONCE! It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that if Sowers is allowed to pitch the 6th inning, we lose. How much of a larger sample piece does a decision maker need?!

You ever hear that saying: "there's two things certain in life: death and taxes"? Well, add a third. "There's three things certain in life: death, taxes and the Indians losing if Sowers is allowed to pitch the 6th!"

I read somewhere that Sowers has a 3-point-something ERA from innings 1 thru 5. In innings 6, it balloons to near 81.00!

I just don't understand why Wedgie doesn't automatically go to the bullpen before the 6th inning? Reason #586 why Eric Wedge should not coaching this team anymore!

I've heard it all now! Bizarre Indians Minor League Giveaway....

Calling all FATS!!!!.........

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Valley Surgical Arts will be giving away a liposuction treatment to one lucky lady during the July 8th Scrappers game against the Auburn Doubledays.

Fans can register for the promotion by stopping by the Anthem Fan Assistance Center and filling out an entry form. The Scrappers will select five finalists that will be invited to the July 8th Ladies Night Celebration, sponsored by Valley Surgical Arts. During the game, the five finalists will be invited down to the field, where the Scrappers will announce the grand prize winner.
You can’t make this stuff up. I know that the minor leagues are known for their oft insane promotions, but this one has to take the cake. No pun intended. Okay, maybe a little.

The team is calling it a “unique” giveaway which may be the understatement of the year. The best part? The July 8th game against Auburn falls conveniently on an ”All You Can Eat” Wednesday. Talk about having your target audience in the house! Those Scrappers sure know how to promote!!!!   :D

Thanks HD!

Well, it seems the "Cleveland Curse" followed DeRo to the Cards. He is on the DL with a torn sheath tendon in his right wrist and there is NO timetable for his return!!!!

Victor Martinez Wants to Retire a Cleveland Indian

Good news for a change. Sorry to dispel the Trade Rumors, but it looks like V-Mart wants to stay in C-Town.........
“I can’t see myself in another uniform.

This organization is great. This organization has made me a better player and a better person. I love this organization.
In my mind, I’d like to retire as an Indian.”

Where's MY Letter, Mr. Dolan?!

With the Washington Nationals sitting at 26-61 at the All-Star break, they recently decided to cut ties with Manager Manny Acta. In doing so, the front office wrote a letter to the Nats Fans. The full letter can be read here...

A letter to Nationals fans | MLB.com: News

Here's a brief snipit....
No one is more dissatisfied in the first half of the 2009 Washington Nationals season than we are. Like you, we had hoped that some of our younger players would have matured faster, and that the addition of some of our new veterans would have significantly improved our record from a season ago. Our hope was that a solid club leadership would emerge on and off the field, and that some intangible combinations would begin to click, resulting in many winning streaks. [...]
We know we have a way to go, but the end result will be all the richer for the early days we’ve spent together at Nationals Park. We are getting better. We want you to be with us as the pieces of the puzzle come together. Your support is powerful to the Nationals and baseball in Washington. Thank you for your continuing patience and your commitment to a shared dream.

After reading that, I want to know, from an Indians standpoint, where OUR God damn letter is?! Kudos to the Washington brass! A big middle finger to the Cleveland brass! Instead of touting the tired ol' company line, I want an admission something wrong here. I want someone to be accountable. I want answers and I want them now! Where's my assurance things are going to get better?

Sure a letter won't solve the world's problems, but admitting your shortcomings would go a long way with the fan base.

Admission is the first step towards recovery after all.

I'll be waiting by the mailbox Mr. Dolan. Get your ink quill and stationary out.

Q & A with Albert Belle

The Plain Dealer’s Paul Hoynes, the Tribe beat reporter, recently ran into (no pun intended), former masher Albert Belle at the All-Star Game. The following is a few candid Q & A's I thought were noteworthy.....

On Manny Ramirez’s recent suspension:

”Manny is going to hit no matter what. He’s a talented kid.”
On steroids in General:

”Those 101 players who tested positive and haven’t been named yet? I say release all their names so we can get done beating this dead horse.”
When asked if he would want to manage the Indians:

“Unless they got me a lot of new players, I don’t need a headache like that.”
On whether the "roid-rage" Albert had back in the day was the result of steroids:

“No, I was just an angry black man.”
Well, there you have it. An "angry black man" who hit over 375 home runs in 12 years. Who knows what could have happened had Belle’s career not been hampered by a hip injury and the occasional off-field issues.
