What dish is used to receive standard programming?

Thanks! I "think" I can do a 3 lnb with no problems. I assume it would be similar to a Dish 1000, where you set it up to the middle sat and the others fall in place.

hmm....maybe I better let the pros do it? Looking at solid signals, looks like the dish has a primestar like fine tuning adjustment.

yes it does...that is because of the fine tuning

Since you are working with SD only, the main thing that you need KA for is the locals

Well I just watched the install videos on solid signals and it has me scared off! Power inserters, alignment switches, all kinds of gadgets needed to install. YIKES! I think I will let the pros install it :(

Its too bad you can't try it first, and then let the pros do it if you run into trouble. But they most likly won't like that.:)

Well I can try it myself. The owner of the shop said if I have any questions or want them to come out and peak the dish they would do it for free. Does the HD receivers have a setup/signal meter on them, or do I have to use an external meter? I would like to attempt it myself :)

yes the receivers have their own meter built in

used that to peak my mom's slimline after they got the house reroofed

AWESOME! I think I will attempt it. After watching the install video it made it seem like you had to have a bunch of specialized gear :)

uh why attack hemi just out of curiosity?
Since the first few posts were way off the mark (starting with the reply about DISH Network equipment and moving right through the insistence on where locals come from)?
also, you didnt read what the OP wrote...I'll even bold it so you can see it
That's the wonder of DIRECTV's current system. It really doesn't matter what the subscriber wants, they get what DIRECTV says they get unless they go through a dealer. Self installs are very much discouraged by DIRECTV.

I'm not passing judgment on self-installs one way or the other in this thread; just relating what seems to be the order of the day at DIRECTV. This is as opposed to the opposite side of the coin where posters will actively convince someone that self-installing is the only way to go but not tell them about the beating they may take from DIRECTV when they deny them promotions and credits.

Try reading the other posts in the thread next time. You could plainly see You and others weren't correct either. If I want to post in the D* sight to help a fellow Pub Member thats the right I pay Yearly for. But it looks like your not correct on where his locals come from either. It was Already stated by an Installer what setup to use.
Slimline!

If you look closely, I was the one that pointed out where the locals actually come from and that the Slimline would likely be part of the installation. The single element that I may have been mistaken about was the dual dish thing, but I didn't want to assume that the OP was going to install suitable DVRs given that they said specifically that they were getting SD DVRs (and R22 DVRs have been an on-gain off-again thing of late).

A widely held advantage to self-installing is that you get what you want, but doing so doesn't necessarily insure you'll get what you need (with respect to the Rolling Stones). DIRECTV can be very hard-nosed about you having everything you need for the services you subscribe to before they will activate you.

Having a subscription or membership doesn't absolve you from researching your "advice" as opposed to noodling out loud and refining your answer as you bump into walls.

knock it off guys. The issue has been resolved when the D* installer corrected me (since I originally said it would be a 2 dish setup).

Customer will get 2 HD DVR's and a Slimline 3LNB setup and the local retailer will allow him to do a self install if he so desires :)

keep us updated :)

Have fun with Directv. My mom changed from cable (Crapcast) after almost 20 years of it (and the 5 or 6 name changes the cable company went through) and loves D* now :)

If Larry is the same way with this install as his original FTA install, we'll get blow by blow commentary on the install :D ;)

I have come a long way since then :)

I am now debating on mounting the dish on a small deck or a pole mount. If I remember correctly, a 2" od pole is needed? If I mount it on my deck, I am questioning if I will need any support braces. The location of the deck is protected by my house, and I would be mounting the dish about waist level so the back is protected from wind by the elevated deck and house. I have been looking around and most people around me have a support or 2, but those dishes are more out in the open. There are also a fair amount of pole mounts too.

Now speaking of FTA, I wonder if I could use my Fortec receiver to aim the Slimline?
