What dish is used to receive standard programming?

I know! :) The place I am going through is an install shop that also sells DTV and Qwest DSL only. It is a little shop but good people. Last time we had DTV I walked in, signed up and walked out with everything I needed. The owner said only a handfull of people ask about doing a self install. I can't wait to dump Mediacom...wow they have issues!

Thats Awesome. I always installed my own D* Satellite systems. That was always fun and relaxing.
But its seems now days D* doesn't even want you to do any of our own installs. But thats great if they will let you.:)
E* lets you do your own installs ,,,, IF you Buy everything!:(
D* used to give me all my equipment I needed for free, and I could install it myself, But seems most of those days are gone.

I LOVED those days! We got an RCA DSS system when they first came out around 95. Installed it myself. Installed all of our Dish and DTV systems over the years :)

Yep! I got my First D* system in 95 from Sears. $850 Included the cable, phone wire,Compass, single LNB 18"dish, Little handbook, and 1 Huge RCA Receiver. I still have that receiver, and it still works, Needs a Access card , But I lost the remote.
My Boss at the Time bought the D* system Right when it first came out and he paid over $1000 for the system.
I guess I shouldn't have complained about paying $199 for an HD DVR, this seems like a Hell of a deal compaired to the 1995 system.:D

or they might do what davedirectv says and just use a HD receiver as the only option....which would give him a slimline

I cant see DirecTV doing the HD option if all the OP wants is SD

Ice - D* IS now, in fact, ONLY installing HD boxes in ALL 72.5 &/or MPEG4 only markets, on new installs or upgrades, regardless if the sub is SD or HD:

Discussion Forum

As you can see, they also NOT installing any new R22's, even for SD DVR subs - ALL DVR's in the markets are all HD DVRs. They simply lock the boxes down to 480i for SD subs that aren't paying for HD access.

D* is no longer doing ANY 72.5 dishes in ANY markets any more, even in HD markets for SD only subs. The HD receivers (& R22's) downconvert any locals that are broadcast in HD only in MPEG4, so that D* is no longer putting up SD copies of HD locals in 72.5 markets, which is why ALL MPEG4 equpment is required in these markets.

I also had a client last week who had an HD DVR & SD DVR that were installed about a year ago. The SD DVR died & when D* shipped him a replacement receiver, they sent him an HD DVR instead. Although I had to come over & hook it up, since the HD DVR's do NOT have an RF output, (the SD DVR fed the rest of the house) he was happy in the long run that he just got a FREE HD DVR upgrade. :)

interesting info

Thanks :)

so as for the original question, will they give the OP 2 dishes or the slimline? I assume they will still give him 2 dishes but the HD receivers? Or will he get the slimline and only be able to see his locals in HD (which is all of his locals but CW)

Slimline ONLY w/all HD boxes. As I said above, D* has completely stopped installing ANY 72.5 on new installs/moves/upgrades - again, it makes no difference if the sub is SD or HD. And yes, any of his locals that are up in HD, he will ONLY be able to see the HD versions of them. But again, the receivers will just downconvert to SD, & he will be able to adjust whether they will be letterboxed or cropped, to properly fill a 4:3 screen. This is a BIG improvement over those R22's, where you CANNOT make this adjustment! (eg: when any of our HD locals are broadcasting a 4:3 pic w/side bars, & you are trying to watch on a 4:3 TV, you end up getting the "postage stamp" effect on these stations, & NO way to fix it - VERY ANNOYING!)

But also another tidbit - any other of his locals (such as his CW in this case) that are NOT up in HD, D* has put up duplicate SD MPEG4 Ka versions, so that they get EVERY one of their locals via the slimline, whether they are all in HD or not. This applies to ALL Ka markets. In our market, our local CW & MTN stations are not up in HD, but are up in SD MPEG4, so if you do happen to have BOTH a slimline & 72.5 dish, you end up with 2 SD versions of these channels.

Boy things have changed in the last 2 years! How hard is the slimline to install? I wonder if I should let them install it?

Its Not that bad , But without a good satellite finder, It can become difficult.
I was told the 3lnb Version was easy compaired to the 5lnb version. Too bad in my area the 5lnb is still needed.

1. DIRECTV does NOT send out equipment to anyone who is not already up and running.

2. If you're planning on a self-install, see #1.

As has been clearly understood by just about everyone but Hemi, Waterloo is a two dish market and it is likely that they will install a slimline as the 101W dish for when the locals get transferred to a Ka satellite.

uh why attack hemi just out of curiosity?

also, you didnt read what the OP wrote...I'll even bold it so you can see it

The local place I am going through is the same place I got my Primestar dishes a few years back. They have no problem with letting someone do a self install and even say they will come out and help or peak the dish if I want

and folks do self installs before if they have the new equipment. Neighbor guy did it about 3 months ago. The dish was already up from previous owner and I helped him make sure it was installed right

Directv DOES send out equipment for self installs. We called the 800 # first and they said self install was no problem. I decided to go to my local installer/retailer and he too said self install is no problem.

I wouldnt attempt peaking a slimline without a birdog or accutrak meter though... its not that hard, but without a meter its probably impossible to get the ka band correctly, and those analog meters from radioshack arnt gonna cut it lol. and hemi, (not trying to pick on you, just through info out to the forum) the sl3 and sl5 are installed exactly the same, you still peak the dish around the 101bird, but in the sl5 market you just need to adjust the tilt until your 119 is strong, altho most people can leave it at a fixed point and be done, in my area its 63. but the two turns to the left, then counting back fractions of turns sh*t, yea thats all exactly the same.

Well I just looked at my Directv Online Order Detail - first line says this:

Item Quantity Amount
MPEG4 Equip for Standard Def _No HD Access Fee B6511/2 1 Free

So, I must be getting 2 HD DVRs. So that means I will have a slimline also? does anyone know if it is a 3 or a 5? THANKS to all for the help! :)

It will be a slimline as dishrich posted above
http://www.satelliteguys.us/1910353-post48.html

it will be a 3 (99/101/103). My mom got one of those when she got D*. Looks really nice. Looks like a single LNB dish on steroids (because its biger and the LNB "eye" is much bigger) :)

also he mentions the locals. All your locals are in HD EXCEPT for Channel 20 (CW/My channel). So you'll get CBS, NBC, PBS, FOX, ABC in HD ..CW/My is only in SD. If you dont have a HDTV you can set up the channels to look fine on the regular TV's
