Thats Awesome. I always installed my own D* Satellite systems. That was always fun and relaxing.Last time we had DTV I walked in, signed up and walked out with everything I needed. The owner said only a handfull of people ask about doing a self install.
Yep! I got my First D* system in 95 from Sears. $850 Included the cable, phone wire,Compass, single LNB 18"dish, Little handbook, and 1 Huge RCA Receiver. I still have that receiver, and it still works, Needs a Access card , But I lost the remote.I LOVED those days! We got an RCA DSS system when they first came out around 95. Installed it myself. Installed all of our Dish and DTV systems over the years
or they might do what davedirectv says and just use a HD receiver as the only option....which would give him a slimline
I cant see DirecTV doing the HD option if all the OP wants is SD
so as for the original question, will they give the OP 2 dishes or the slimline? I assume they will still give him 2 dishes but the HD receivers? Or will he get the slimline and only be able to see his locals in HD (which is all of his locals but CW)
Its Not that bad , But without a good satellite finder, It can become difficult.Boy things have changed in the last 2 years! How hard is the slimline to install? I wonder if I should let them install it?
What don't I understand?1. DIRECTV does NOT send out equipment to anyone who is not already up and running.
2. If you're planning on a self-install, see #1.
As has been clearly understood by just about everyone but Hemi, Waterloo is a two dish market and it is likely that they will install a slimline as the 101W dish for when the locals get transferred to a Ka satellite.
oh ok...good to knowSlimline ONLY w/all HD boxes. As I said above, D* has completely stopped installing ANY 72.5 on new installs/moves/upgrades - again, it makes no difference if the sub is SD or HD. And yes, any of his locals that are up in HD, he will ONLY be able to see the HD versions of them. But again, the receivers will just downconvert to SD, & he will be able to adjust whether they will be letterboxed or cropped, to properly fill a 4:3 screen. This is a BIG improvement over those R22's, where you CANNOT make this adjustment! (eg: when any of our HD locals are broadcasting a 4:3 pic w/side bars, & you are trying to watch on a 4:3 TV, you end up getting the "postage stamp" effect on these stations, & NO way to fix it - VERY ANNOYING!)
But also another tidbit - any other of his locals (such as his CW in this case) that are NOT up in HD, D* has put up duplicate SD MPEG4 Ka versions, so that they get EVERY one of their locals via the slimline, whether they are all in HD or not. This applies to ALL Ka markets. In our market, our local CW & MTN stations are not up in HD, but are up in SD MPEG4, so if you do happen to have BOTH a slimline & 72.5 dish, you end up with 2 SD versions of these channels.

The local place I am going through is the same place I got my Primestar dishes a few years back. They have no problem with letting someone do a self install and even say they will come out and help or peak the dish if I want
