It's a little-known fact that the very first football game played on Thanksgiving was, coincidentally enough, on the very first Thanksgiving.
Yep, way back in 1621. A few hours before they lunched together for the first time, the Pilgrims and Indians challenged each other to a game of "futballe", a sport once banned in England because King Henry II felt that his subjects were neglecting their practice of archery. Gov. William Bradford hiked out the first ball - in this case, an inflated pig's bladder - and the game, sponsored by Mayflower Movers, Plymouth and a fledgling insurance company ("Get a piece of the real Rock") commenced.
With 23 players per side, the teams played a sloppy, savage game. The settlers clung to a narrow 16-13 lead, thanks to a touchdown pass by John Carver from a musket formation, but Hippopotawatha connected with Fleet Foot (White Moccasins) Running Bear in the end zone as time ran out. Final score: 20-16 for the home team. Redskins over the Patriots.
Then the winners and losers sat down to a feast of wild turkey and venison, licked their wounds and, refusing to help with the dishes, settled back to await the outcome of the Lions-Bears game that would be played 313 years later.
