Think of it this way--everything E* beams down to your dish is digital. I'm sure many of you still have non-digital SD sets that are capable of tuning every channel on those sets, which means your box is converting the digital signal to an analog signal so those sets can resolve them. It's the same reason you cannot tune channel 418 on your digital cable without the box--it must be converted!
