I'm at a loss. I just noticed my this week my RPTV has a definite burn in from the Dish screen saver logo being displayed after inactivity. I walk away and leave my TV on for long periods.

I don't know what to do. I have a Hitachi 57S500 and in several places during a white or light yellow screen I can see the silhouette of the DISH screen saver.:river :river :river

I never thought that the logo would burn in since it jumps from place to place. Dish needs to re-do their saver so it CREEPS like it used to on the 522.

What can I do???

I mean this in the best possible way, but that was just dumb. Why would you leave a RPTV on for long periods when you aren't watching? You know that burn in is a possibilty. I have the same TV and have zero burn in whatsoever, but of course I don't leave it on if I'm not watching it.

A screen saver should do exactly that, prevent burn in. I would post some pics of the burn-in here. I'd then email them to Dish too.

I had slight burn-in on my Plasma after the 1st year because I never stretched the 4:3 material. One day when I was watching a scene where there was a clear blue sky on the entire screen, I noticed that the side pillars were "brighter". I freaked and started to stretch from that day on. Since it was slight, the rest of the screen appears to have caught up, and I can't detect the pillars anymore.

Mark,
Sorry for your pain. Yes, one would expect the screen saver to do it's job. Turn the set off and it'll probably balance over time.

Still a good lesson to avoid technologies that risk burn-in. I will not be forced to watch stretched/distorted content. I'd never touch a plasma. Stick with DLP or LCD.

LCoS. Rear projection. No chance of burn in. JVC DiLAs sell for less than $2,000.

I hear some plasmas have a wacky method now to attempt to get rid of them.. call the company that makes it.. see if they have a software update that would help get rid of a ghost image..

Would disabling or changing the 'Inactivity Standby' to 8 hours help? And also set the daily/nightly update to a time when you're most likely to have the TV off. (so that after update completes and screen saver starts, your TV is off).

Would never give up my plasma....but refuse to watch anything "stretched"....didn't spent this money to watch a distorted picture!

I just use the "grey bar" mode on SD as much as possible & let it go...

...and, to the OP, turn off your TV when you're not watching it....geeezzzz

Even a screensaver after months of display will cause burn-in. The "always on" philosophy for electronics should be limited to non-display items. There are too many drawbacks when applied to displays.

I have a 57" hitachi 57s715. I have never had a problem with burn in and alot of the time I fall alseep on the sofa watching tv and the screensaver stays on overnight. My best guess is that you have the contrast turned up way too much if that screensaver burned a image into your set. the logo seems to move every 10 seconds.

Something to try that some people say they've had some success with is to put the TV on a channel or input that displays static. That black and white snowy kind of static. Crank the contrast way up and leave it displaying that channel over night. Some people say that this 'scrubbed' minor burn in off of their set. It may or may not help but it's the only thing short of repair that I've heard of to try.

If you have a tv type known for burn in issues I wouldn't trust a screen saver even if they are supposed to prevent it.

Man that sucks but I never, ever leave the TV on anything like that. I am even too paranoid to listen to the cd or sirus stations because I am afraid that something would burn in. On those you cannot stretch to where the screensaver will jump past the 4:3 borders. Same with the interactive stuff and the off screensaver. The only problem I have is when I am not around and the wife and/or kids are watching something. They don't give a damn and think I am nit-picking. They'll leave anything on, 4:3, paused DVR, letter boxed, whatever. Sometimes I will come home from work and there it is sitting on something that could burn in. This drives me nuts! But anyway, to the OP, try lowing your brightness and maybe you will not notice the burn in as much and possibly after time it will even out and go away somewhat. Best of luck!

I've even heard of people having problems with the Network logos burning in on their plasmas. I do work for a restaurant that has a bar with Plamas and the ESPN logo is very faint in the corner. You figure it's on the screen like 10 hours a day. But people that watch the same station a lot might experience burn in of the network logo. That's why I don't like Plasma. I have a DLP and have paused my DVR and went away for the weekend and when I came home the TV was on somehow (it's one of HP's DLP TV's that are not even being made anymore and it turns itself on and off sometimes. It has a recall but I've been lazy to take it back and get something else) and there was no burn in. My Samsung LCD 19" SyncMaster computer monitor gets burn in because my screensaver won't stay on for more than 10min and it stops so I always have to remember to turn the monitor off. Some spyware comes up or something causing the screensaver to go off and then the monitor never goes into sleep mode. Anyone have a recommendation for a new DLP? I have a 52" HP one that I need to return since it shuts off by itself all the time. Annoying. I spent $1500 for it and need to find something in the same price range and around the same size.

An LCD cannot have burn-in, rather it can have short-term image retention. It is not permanent and will go away. CRT and plasma are the only two technologoes where burn-in can occur and when it does is usually permanent.

I must say, I love my 61" JVC, outstanding picture, and as good or maybe a little better than my neighbors new Sony !
