Agree 6 tuners or 8 tuners is nice.
Because there are occasions that all 4 of us are watching live tv, and may want to record something.

Not 80% of the time, But that 20% that it happens is enough to aggravate the crap out of me.

But 16 tuners is way more than enough.
5 is not.

You say that now ...

There was a time not that long ago when we were happy with 2 tuners, we could now watch a channel that we were not Recording.

Then D* came out with 5 tuners and everybody was like ... I don't need that many, but it IS nice to have ... (those with larger families were even more happy) ...
Now .... people are not happy with More than 5 ...

Seems NOBOBY is happy with any amount anymore.

I shouldn't say nobody, but you sure hear from the people that think they need 16 ....

How many times is anyone using more than 4 at a time on a regular basis.

I have 5 tuners on my Genie and have Never used all 5 of them.

Of course that thinking goes out the window when they brought the Clients into play, when you find out that a Client uses 1 tuner from the Genie.

I don't have that issue, I have 5 tuners to use in my set up, don't share with any others (recvrs).

I understand that my situation isn't the norm.

I have 4 live tvs in my house.

5 tuners would cause a huge fight.
6 is just enough, 8 would be perfect.
Because it would be like back in the day when each room had 2 each.

What your missing Jimbo, is Directv was putting 2 Tuner DVRs in each room if you wanted.
Now that the Genie is out they are giving 5 tuners to satisfy up to even 6 rooms.
That's far less then the Years each room got R15s and HR20s.

Correct,
So why not go with a Genie and Hr24s, this way the clients are not stealing tuners from your main most important recvr.

Because customer shouldn't be forced into Spending $200 on leased receivers.
Directv should have a better answer for Whole home service than a 5 tuner receiver.

I had to spend the extra money to get the recvrs I needed ....
They can give me back the extra $600 I spent.

I'd rather be allowed to have 2 Genies. And 2 HR24s instead.

when the genie came out, dish users said 5 tuners was overkill, the hopper was perfect
now that the h3 is out, 5 is not enough, you have to have at least 8, 10, ect

as i have said, its not just the tuners, but clients using those tuners
by allowing the other units instead of forcing people into clients directv was and still is ahead of the game

you throw the hopper in with the 722, and share things, then you have a winner

tunerless clients are worthless imho

I don't know anyone that said 5 tuners was overkill.
I also don't know anyone that said 3 was better.
I've always said from the Start, way before a Genie came out that Directv needed an 8 tuner master receiver.

Dish 722 should have been a 3 tuner for the simple fact that running 2 rooms off a 722 is useless if one wants to record something else.

My guess many other Dish fans felt the same way, and the Hopper was born.

The Difference is Dish has always had an option for 2 Hoppers at No upfront cost.
Directv once the Genie was out, forget getting anything other than a client for free.

3 or 5 tuners for a single person is more than adequate.
But for 4 or more rooms of service it's not.

It was better when Directv gave the HR 34, and 3 H25s for free.
Now it's just those dumb C41s.

Can you combine a Genie and HR24 so both can see the same playlist? I have a DTV install scheduled next week and would consider this setup if they work together. The sales person thought they would both be separate but he said he wasn't sure. I'm coming from a H3 setup and am definitely concerned about serving 4 rooms with only 5 tuners.

Also, can anyone comment on the speed of the C41 clients? I always thought the general consensus was that Dish receivers were so much faster than DTV receivers but after spending the last several months with multiple Joey2 clients I sure hope that's not the case. If these Joeys are faster than DTV clients then DTV must be extremely slow!

genie works fine with an hr24, and you share recordings, this is my setup

But you can't schedule recordings from one to the other, you can't edit to do lists from one to the other.

The HR24 only allows one remote stream at a time.
There are some limitations.

true, but i have no clients, so no remote streams
i use my tablet if i want to pick which dvr i schedule to
the directv app with multi dvrs makes it much better

I like that I don't need a tablet or app to schedule my recordings from home.

And I have 3 remote rooms, which is the max the Genie can even handle at one time.

Actually not really.
When you Activate PTA, it takes a tuner from your 9 leaving you with 8.

And now if you have the new UI U210 PTA can't be shared between Hoppers anymore.

I have a 2 Hopper setup, so if you want view PTA across Hoppers, you have to activate PTA on both, and that only leaves 4 live tuners left to serve 4 rooms, while them 2 tuners are tied up for over 3 hours for mostly garbage programs.

Quite frankly I've never ever had a use for this feature for the simple fact that local network programming IMO flat out sucks.

For the 4 hours a week our family does from PTA it's not worth 21 hours of tuner tie ups just to "Auto hop " 2 out of the 4 programs...

PTAT only uses a tuner during 3 prime time hour on days that you have it active. (Don't use your problems with a voluntary UI 210 Beta test as an issue with multiple Hoppers.) PTA can be set to one day a week with 2 day save if you want autohop. The 4 channel/1 tuner recording is active 24/7 whether PTAT is on or off.

each system has its advantages, as i have said before
i may go to the hopper if directv doesnt get on the ball and bring out a real 4k receiver

Dude get your facts straight, the comment was geared towards a person with multiple Hoppers.
And U210 is factory-installed Hopper software with a 4K joey.

So a person with 2 Hoppers and a 4K joey is not going to be able to share PTA recordings no matter how much fluff you want to put on it.

Shouldn't have a 4k Joey, designed to go with Hopper3. It's too bad you weren't warned. Carbon interface with Hoppers is still Beta, no matter how you slice it.

And as to comment to how slow the Joeys are, we'll
I was told the Joey 1 at the time were so much faster than the C31s, and that was flat out bogus.
The are slow and far worse.

Now the Joey 2s are much better, but not much different than the C41.

Don't let Dish fans fool you.

Can you have different priority settings on C41 clients? For instance, can I set everything to automatically record at highest priority on the Genie and lowest on the clients?
