For a long time I was resisting to get a DVR of any kind. I was perfectly satisfied with what VCR and DVD Recorders can do for free and could not justify paying $12 a month for a TIVO or DVR service. Now I think I am ready, because I kind of tired of keeping track on when to set the time to record, but this is my dilemma. I have ViP211 and wanted to replace that one with ViP622. However, after reading all the complaints from other users, about how many problems they encounter with their 622 unit I am not sure if that would be a wise decision. I had replaced my 211 already 3 times with in 1 year and really do not want to go thru the same thing again with 622. I am not sure if there are other DVRs compatible with Dish. TIVO is the only one, but I would like to get a Dual Tuner and not sure if that will work with Dish.

So, here are my questions:

1. Is the ViP622 is my only choice or there are other DVRs that I can use with Dish?
2. If the ViP622 is the only choose, should I plunge and upgrade or I will regret that later?

The tivo series 3 will not work at all with Dish and the older models can only do SD. I've not had much trouble with my 622 but with the last software update I have been having to reboot more frequently.

If you add an antenna to the mix you can record 3 shows at once, something no one else offers.

You also get a second tv connection, something also unique to dish. Even if you don't need a second tv you can use the output to feed your dvd recorder while you watch something else on tv1.

I have had a VIP622 since last January. I haven't ever had one issue with it and am really happy with it (I was a happy 522 owner before this). I just got the 4.03 software the other day and really like the additions. I have read other people's complaints here, but have had nothing but a perfect experience with the device myself. Get it :) It is the best and least expensive HD-DVR there is.

I have two 622's, and, given the amount of technology involved, they really do work amazing well. You will find the dvr experience "liberating." Go for it:)

I've had my 622 for a year now and it has been great. No problems here and its put to use every single day. I'm really loving that new Picture Next to Picture PIP feature.

Don't let the 622 complaints fool ya, its a really good box with only rare problems for others.

I've had a 622 for almost a year. The first was DOA wrt the HDMI output (plenty of discussion on that issue!) but the replacement has been essentially flawless. I'm not a "power user" like many others here, but what features I do use work predictably and reliably. No regrets here...

Go for the 622! I was a long time fence sitter as well and have very much enjoyed it for the past few months now. Don't have any of the problems that you see around here, even with the latest software upgrade. Don't forget to check out the DVR Advantage pricing.

Definitely go with the 622. (or wait for the 722). But the 622 is very nice. The only issue (depending on when u got ur 211....if it is leased) is that they might not want to give it to you through the Dish'n It Up. I believe u have to wait 18 months for that (unless u 'CEO' the issue...that's what I did).

Once you get one, you'll kick yourself for waiting.
In fact, you should have gotten a Dish DVR years ago.
The reason you did not do so, is that in any media, whether TV News or Internet Forums, only negative news is of interest.

I guarantee you that none of us are going to want to read 20,000 posts of "I don't have any problems with my DVR". "All my timers worked this week, just like the past 100 weeks" and so forth. It would be boring.

In actuality, if you had bought a model 508 or model 721 Dish DVR, you would not have paid one cent of DVR monthly fees. And, if you bought a model 625 Dish DVR, it was $6 DVR Fee, not $12.,,

Thank you for your replies.

I am going to call Dish and see what kind of upgrade deals they have right now. Last time I called (in March); I was told $150 to upgrade for the existing customers and $10 rebate for 12 month. I was surprised to hear that new customers can get it for $50.

Flawless...............

No problemo.............Much better then the "D" DVR Recorder I had.............

$0 for my 622

:)
I was going to cancel and was sent to the specialist rep....who of course wanted to talk me out of it......ended up giving me the 622 for $149.....then a $50 rebate....then $10 off my bill for 10 mos.= $100.

So after 10 mos. of course it will have been free.....of course they hooked me for 18 mos. committment.

Directv kept giving me all kinds of prices every time I called....ended up getting pissed with them and staying with Dish........by reducing the extra box rental fee and using the DVR Advantage plan.....I hope to also reduce my monthly bill some too!

I'm happy and I don't even get the 622 until 3 more days! :)

I have (2) 622's and they both hum along quite well, in fact they are record something daily on multiple channels.

What are my Upgrade Choices
