First, CC (closed captioning) is dropping out on TV1 some period of time after TV2 has been turned on. Doesn't happen consistently or immediately when TV2 is started, so it's hard to deign a pattern. Hardware failure of the ViP 622? Or should I investigate other possibilities? Temperature (don't remember the path to check the 622's temp)?

When the failure occurs, the only solution is a receiver re-boot (ya know, the 15 second thing).

Second, I (as well as other hard-of-hearing types) was quite pleased to see that the San Diego LiL HD feeds are now showing closed captioning. And doing it very good, too. Noticed CC on channels that I don't even expect it (watched a Jerry Lewis movie last night on Voom Family that was captioned).

Third, TNT captioning doesn't ever show on TV1 (receiver decode), but does on TV2 (television set decode).

Note that captioning is enabled on all sets at all times, so this cannot be an issue.

TV1 HD CC is done by the 622. TV2 CC is done by your TV. Often TV2 CC will work when nothing seems available on TV1. HDTVs do not do CC from HDMI or component, only from air, RF, or composite, i.e., SD signals--well the RF HD signals with be CC-ed by most sets with a separate setup.

The 622 TV1 CC varies by station in the likelihood of being displayed HBO and SHO are probably 100%, local direct may be very bad, if at all, with missing words and leading or trailing letters. HD Sat locals are different, not necessarily better.

To revive CC on a channel likely to be working:
Menu-881-left-click(off)-right-click(done)-view-cancel. Repeat turning CC on.
the 622 loses track that CC is supposed to be on.

Thanks for the response.

I was aware of the sources of CC decode (TV!=receiver, TV2=set). I was not aware that HDMI can't or won't pass through captioning, but it is not correct to say that component will not do CC. It does.

I have a seven year old Mitsubishi 55" HD set that was equipped with all the state-of-the-art connections available at that time (no HDMI), so component (Y, Pb, Pr) cabling was to be the preferred connection method for an HD decoder input. When I purchase my first 811 (one of the first on my block), this is how I hooked up. As I recall, HBO and SHOW were my only two satellite options for HD. Absolutely no problem with CC for these or any of the SD programming that was available. At that time, I was in a location that permitted me access to some OTA fare. This is when I began to have heated discussions with Dish regarding them not passing on the OTA network HD CC.

Currently, I do receive quality captioning (still using component connections) on all programming (including LiL HD broadcasts) that provides it with the exception of TNTHD.

As to the resetting of CC, I have tried the method you described with sporadic results. Usually a hard re-boot is required to regain the captioning. As I mentioned, the captioning drop out on TV1 is usually a result of theTV2 tuner being turned on. Loss of captioning may occur at any time, perhaps immediately, perhaps an hour later. If the TV2 tuner is not turned on, TV1 is good for the entire time that TV2 is inactive.

The basic question here relating to the CC drop out is whether the CC drop-out is due to a general fault with the ViP 622 that requires a receiver change out or perhaps a heating problem or a ????? problem.

As far as TNTHD goes, does anyone receive the HD CC?

I just wish they would add a quicker way to turn CC on/off. I don't use it much but when I do want it its a bother having to go thru all the menus to do so.

Yeah. Even I agree although it's necessary for the most part to have CC all the time (I've had 50% hearing loss from the age of 35 caused by industrial noise pollution). But occasionally when watching a sporting event, the captioning blocks scoring information at the top and bottom of the screen. Really, how much useful information comes from listening to the talking heads?

You need to tell my 51" Hitachi that it is not supposed to do CC over HDMI. It apparently didn't get the memo! :p

Since I don't have an HDMI connection on my current TV1, this is good to know when I replace it. Otherwise I would have connected via Component as I'm doing now.

I am considering whether or not to put a second HD DVR where TV2 is and it would probably work for me to use an HDMI cable here.

BTW ... is there currently a single tuner HD DVR available? Since I don't think that I can share my TV1 HD recordings with other HD receivers in my home, this (or another ViP 611) is the route that I think I would have to take. I understand that at some point in the future, I may be able to put an external USB ported hard drive on the 211 but conjecture and Dish future promises are not always compatible.
