i need to combine my ota antenna and my fta sat so i only have one wire going into the house. is this recommended or does someone have a better idea? also, can i use my diseqc switch from my fta as a diplexer/combiner?

Search for "DBS Diplexer" those are made to do what you are asking for. A UHF-VHF diplexer will not work, those type have a disk capacitor inline that will not pass the voltage required to power the LNB. Get 2 of them, you will need one by the TV set/Sat receiver and the other by your Dish/TV antenna outside.
