updating a receiver

I have a DPP44 switch. I realize that a 322 receiver needs to be updated prior to being hooked up to this switch. Question: Can I take the cable coming straight from the dish (say the 119) and plug it in to the 322 receiver and then update it. Finishing by hooking up to the DPP44 after the software has been updated?? Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!
