I dont see my CAID # in the list:( 82014295 wonder if these are the 1st releases

Agreed, since it will work on any 622 in your house, the data is mostlikely tied via account number, stored on the smartcard (which can be changed by DISH). So I'd say all would be OK!

Edit: Well its not a card anymore, but embeded securty chip, whatever you want to call it, that thing :)
That was the original intention of the feature, but it looks like things have changed:
When we talked about content transfer between receivers using the HDD a few weeks ago, my information was wrong. I initially thought subscribers could transfer between receivers registered under the same account. Disregard this info. Upon initial software release the hard drive is intended for use with one receiver; if subscribers try to attach the HDD to a second receiver, they may risk loss of content. This may change in future software updates.
Grand ideas of archival storage may be a risky undertaking until the HDD can be opened up to all receivers on an account....

Since they say you "may lose data", maybe some of you with two 622's can experiment by transferring just one show or movie and trying it out on the other receiver.

Yes, I need to try and remember to do this.

Also, remember that supposedly, the content is moved from the 622 internal drive. So experiment with something you don't if you lose completely.

Just received my new LaCie 500G hard drive from Amazon. It came pre-formatted FAT 32. Should I connect it to my PC and re-format to NTFS prior to connecting it to the 622?? Anyone know for sure? Scott, can you find out for us?

Thanks

You might copy off any files that are on the drive as delivered. Then one day you might retire it from Dish service and use it with a PC, and those files could come in handy. Or, conceivably, your drive might not play well with Dish and you could then use it immediately with a PC. Not likely, but possible. Or Dish could even delay or kill the feature.

Dish Network Dummies

After 20 minutes trying to find an intelligent person to talk too I found none. No one knows anything about a firmware upgrade and very little about output to a USB drive.

From the Front Page:

"It should be noted that while the software for external storage is now rolling out you are asked NOT TO call Dish Network to activate the External Storage service until August 15th. (AGAIN DO NOT CALL ABOUT EXTERNAL STORAGE UNTIL THE 15TH!)"

PLEASE do not call until the 15th as Dish will not be able to help you out as their systems will not have this service listed on their computers until the 15th.

Yes. And perhaps the very reason that Dish is rolling the update out slowly, so as to not overwhelm their tech support with external storage related phone calls from those who cannot read or follow instructions.

Does anyone think that they may add the ability to enable the external storage feature as a DIY upgrade via the Customer Service interface on the receiver, or Dish Network's web site?

It would certainly reduce a number of calls, and would perhaps speed up activation for those anxious few.

Cheers,
Spence

Spence:

They won't let customers install 622s on lease and they aren't that hard to install.

Cheers,
Don't I know it. I had a co-worker purchase a 622 on eBay. He wanted me along as I had some experience aiming and peaking the Dish 1000 antenna.

They gave him all sorts of s#%$ when he called in and tried to activate it because he didn't pay $50 or whatever to have it installed.

...then they wanted to charge him the $50 anyway. He threatened to drop service and they backed off. Kind of nuts.
