It looks like I'm not a Dish candidate. The tech came out today, took out his compass thingy and gave me the bad news. I can site 61.5 no problem, but there is no LOS to 110/119 EXCEPT for a pole mount on the lawn...the FRONT lawn.

I slowly took this in knowing that the line of trees surrounding the back of my house was likely going to be a problem. Tree trimming is out of the question, a whole tree would have to come down AND my neighbors behind it so that's a non-starter.

So the wife and I have a couple of days to think about that pole-mounted front yard Dish 500 option or we stick with our cable. :(

Any chance everything will be going to 61.5 soon?

Sincerely,

Depressed

Doubt anything is going on 61.5 for what your looking for.

Just have it put out on a pole, have the pole cut down so it's only a foot or two off the ground and put a flower bed around it. That or stick with the monopoly unless you have overbuilt cable in your area.

We have done some installs for people where the neighbour had a line of site , so we mounted the dish on his house and ran a cable to the install , later on the nieghbor decided he wants dish too .Peice of cake install.

So check with your nieghbor See if he would let you put the dish on his property

DO NOT ask your neighbor to place the dish on HIS house..This a direct violation of DISH policy...If possible,
Go with the low/short pole mount install....

Funny, I did look at my neighbors perfect site line with envy and dropped a hint that I would love to place my dish on his house. He joked only if I dropped a line into his house. Anyhow, the Dish tech looked at me looking for the go-ahead. 'Course I was just joking and my neighbor didn't really want to do it but it's funny that the Dish tech was willing.

Unfortunately I don't think the pole mount is going to happen. The dish tech thought that it might have to be a 4' pole and it would end up right in front of the property frontage in the grass. There really isn't much that would be able to disguise it and not be obvious. Although I would love to mount it to the electric pole on the corner of my property but we know that it wouldn't fly either.

Unfortunately, he needs to go farther from the house, about 30-50 feet to clear a rather large tree right next to the house. There is no LOS to 110/119 from the house itself. 61.5 is easily sighted though.

Does anyone know if I would have the same issues with DirecTV? My eastern exposure is pretty clear.

Talk about playing with fire!

As a homeowner, I'd tell my neighbor to go to hell.

As a canditate customer, I would never ask that, even in jest. :(

As an installer, I'd tell you to call John Hack here to do it.

As a QC guy, I'd take lots and lots of pictures and notes, probably all while laughing. :D

The core programming for D* comes off the 101 sat, but they still use the 110/119 for some programming, including HD right now.

As far as dish going to all one location soon, they announced the intent to be able to use one somewhat smaller dish for an all Mpeg 4 service. Originally said launching satellites this year (probably delayed). Service maybe next year. There has been lots of speculation on where the satellites will be located e.g 86.5 and 97.
