Is there a legal way of getting the BBC on FTA I like Top Gear and I wanted to see if I can get that here. BBC america is good but their edited for content and language. I called the local PBS station in Fort Wayne and they said they have been trying to get top gear but can't cause its not offered to PBS. They want it but can't cause of the local gear heads want the show.

Having a state run broadcast service and being required to pay for it (but only if you are going to watch it) doesn't sound too entirely bad, especially if they have a lot of channels that are good quality (programming-wise). This is obviously the biggest reason that they have FTA television. But, of course, we see that NOTHING is truly free.
Actually, the license is mandatory if you want to watch TV at all practically, state broadcaster or not. The only exception is watcing it after it airs, from online or DVDs. You can own a TV receiver without a license, so long as you can prove to an inspector, it is not being used to receive TV.

What would "bug" me is having to pay to watch TV (the tax) and ALSO have to pay for SKY TV service as well, as a subscription. I am pretty sure that Sky TV is a paid subscription service like DN or DirecTV. Correct me if I am wrong. If they didn't charge the tax if you were a subscriber - and charged it only when viewing state TV, I guess I could go along with that. Otherwise, it would seem like double-dipping to me, and the person watching the television is the "DIP".

Unfortunately you do, but what you subscribe to are only the subscription channels. You get the free channels for "free" (or no added cost) still, even on Sky.

No BBC on FTA in North America but there should be!

BBC is not FTA but if you have good internet service Google blinkx remote, you can stream and episode at a time form these sites

There is a BBC News Feed channel on AMC 21 Ku @ 12169 MHz 4443 KS/s HORIZ, VPID 177 / APID 180.

This channel usually shows a test pattern and test tone with call letters CPTV - HARTFORD.

I have occasionaly witnessed some actual news programs here at specific times of the day. Very infrequent.

These "porn" channels show some half-nude ladies encouraging you to call them over the phone for a pound per minute. Some of them look good, some rather funny. The later the evening, the more explicit the movements and the smaller the patches of fabric. My wife always tries to imitate their hips movement with no success so far. ;)

LOL Paul! I hope your wife isn't as much of a satellite enthusiast as you are. If she is, she might be a member here in secret and reading your posts... Then you will be sleeping out on the stoop in the snow and the dog will be inside in the nice warm bed! LOL :)

No problem with reading my posts, she tolerates my hobby, sometimes happy when I found a good station, sometimes with a sour face when I scan transponders just to test a changed setting of the motor or receiver.

This imitating of the pelvis up-and-down gave us much fun, we ponder if those ladies were selected for that reason, maybe they have specially trained muscles or a nerval disturbance in their buttocks.

they have a lot of good shows but to be fair, a lot of the tv-ruining reality tv shows started in the UK

I totally agree. Its a bargain compared with what seems to be available on the cable and satellite systems of the US.
But then I would say that wouldnt I. I am British and proud of it.
