Total Newb Question

I have a Directv Slimline AU9 dish. However, I have no clue if it is the 3 LNB or 5 LNB. How do I tell? ........I know, I know.....I did say I'm a newb.

I have two receivers hooked up currently and my wife wants a third one put in the basement. So, if I have the 3 LNB type do I need a multi-switch to hook up more than two receivers? WHat if I have the 5 LNB?

The difference between the two is that the 5 LNB gets signal from all 5 satellites in space while the 3 only gets signal from the 3 main satellites in space. 3 or 5 doesn't have anything to do with the outputs.

What you need to do is first determine if you are using SWM (Single Wire Multiswitch) setup. To do this check to see how many wires are ran into your home. If you only have 1, you prob do. All you need then is to split the signal inside with a DirecTV approved splitter. If you don't you need to make sure 4 lines are ran into your home and connect them to a multiswitch inside your home and then run a line to each receiver (2 for DVR's).

Thanks for the info and the welcome Nutflush. I just checked and there are 4 outputs on the dish. I have cable runs on three of them. Two runs go to my HD-DVR in the living room and one goes to just a standard receiver in the bedroom.

So, it sounds like I need to install a mutiswitch then? Is my research correct in that the Zinwell WB68 is the right one?

Yes and No .....
If I am reading this right, you have a DVR (2 coax runs to it) and a regular rec. (1 coax feed to it.)
IF your running a regular rec. to the basement, you only need 1 coax run which you can connect to the 4th spot on your LNB set up.
IF your running a DVR you'll want 2 coax runs and want a WB68 Multiswitch.
