Torre rips some Yankees!!!

Here's a stat for you..... In the 21st Century (OK, I'm splitting hairs here.... Yes, they won the series in 2000 against my Mets, BUT there is no Year Zero, so technically it was the last year of the 20th Century), the Mets have won more playoff games than the Yankees have....

I love "AFraud"..... That's my new taunt for Yankee fans in my office.... I used to call him ERod of KRod, but KRod is the nickname for the new Mets closer, so I needed a new one....

Lincecum and Peavy didn't/don't have Sabathia, Burnett, Wang and Pettitte ahead of them in the rotation. I contend that a lights out eighth inning guy is MUCH more important than a fifth starter (especially in the barren month of April, when there's multiple off days and rainouts).

Besides, Phil Hughes is not a bad alternative for the back end of a rotation.

Either way, the Yankees are in good shape barring injuries.

That is the key, isn't it? I know they got a stud in Sabathia but I still think the rest of their rotation is a question mark. Burnett has had 2 good years and both led to free agency. He has only gone 200 innings 3 times in his 8 plus years at the ML. I think he is the key for the Yankees fortune this year. Who knows how Wang will come back from his injury and of course Pettitte is getting up there and is only a back of the rotation guy. The Yankees will go as far as their pitching will take them. By no means do they have a better staff than Tampa or Boston.

From your mouth to God's ears! :up

However, I just don't see how this Yankee team doesn't qualify for the playoffs in '09.

They have improved their club DRAMATICALLY!

I'm a Red Sox fan, but if I were the Yankees, I'd put Joba back in the bullpen (now that Pettitte is back in the fold). Use Hughes and/or Kennedy as your #5 starter.

That's what we thought about the Tigers last season. We'll find out in 9 months. Kinda like a pregnancy.

Yessirreee Paul,

And then your team can go out and win over 100 games and have the best record in the league and Home Field Advantage and it still doesn't mean jack sh*t!

For the first time in my baseball-loving life I may sleep walk thru the regular season and wake myself up on the evening of October 4th and read the standings.

Depending upon what I read I may go back to sleep!!!!

I'm not sure if I understand the Joba to the bullpen thing. If he were going to be closer that would be different, but the Yankees already have the best closer of all time still closing games.

If the eighth inning is so important, why aren't other teams taking their most promising young starters and moving them to the bullpen for the eighth inning? Why is Lincecum starting games when he could be helping out in the eighth inning instead? Why was Peavy never moved to the eighth inning?

I gotta agree with Celt's on this one :)

Burnett is a gamble, Wang is coming off a major injury, and Pettitte is coming off a down year. This isn't the Braves staff of the 90's. Right now the Yankees are expecting nothing from Phil Hughes. Anything above nothing will be a bonus.

Yes, an eighth inning guy can be more important than a fifth starter. The Yankees are hoping Joba is a lot more than a fifth starter.

Point taken.

As far as Joba goes, the sky's the limit for this kid. IMO, he has top of the rotation stuff and makeup.

I just thought FOR NOW, he would be helping the Yankees MORE out of the bullpen.

EXACTLY!!!! :up:up:up

Funny, I say that all the time and people insist that I am full of beans. In the end, the BEST TEAM AT THAT TIME does not NEED home field advantage.

...they will just win....;)

Homefield advantage can effect different sports in vastly different ways.

You are missing my point....Home field advantage is only ONE thing and one thing only....it's nice to have.....period. IF the team is good just at the right time, you not having homefield advantage will mean nothing. It means even less when the playoff system is a one shot deal.

C'mon now, we both know you guys aren't going to miss enough games to count on one hand. Neither will I.:)

Exactly. In baseball it's not as big a factor, although I don't have statistics to back myself up. Perhaps I'm wrong.

But in the NBA, teams with home court advantage were 14-1 in playoff series last year. That's domination.

I certainly hope not, I am looking forward to hearing from you all year long

If you aren't here for baseball season, with Bill gone, that would be a double blow to the 2009 baseball thread. Otherwise, all I'd hear about are the Tigers.

Sabre's,
Why are you not posting about your baseball team ?
I'm sure there will be plenty of yankee talk as well, especially if they are playing well.
