Tomorrow Morning I get DN Installed

Tomorrow morning I get Dish Network installed. After reading all the horror stories about certain installers I am kind of worried. I just hope everything goes ok.
Sadly, you don't hear from hundreds of people who get installed, with no problems, every day.... Don't assume it will go bad.

If the installer was a no-show, I imagine he'd have been back letting us know. It does show his "last activity" was around 11:19pm tonight.

Possibly having the installer show up late is a good thing. It shows that he takes his time and gets the job done right. When I had DirecTV installed the installer didn't ground the dish and just ran the coax in our gutters just to save time.
Boy, that's the talking of an optimist there !! You do realize it could mean he/she is new, screws up and has to re-do work, and so on ? :D

The installer arrived around 12:15PM after being delayed from previous installs. When I first showed him where downstairs I wanted the receiver to be located within my communications room he seemed hesitant and kept asking where the coax from the DirecTV dish entered the house. After explaining several times that I wanted all equipment to be located within the communications room and not the living room he agreed to at least try. On his way back outside I heard him say "This is going to take several hours". :)

He then walked around outside and didn't think that he would be able to clear the trees to get all the satellites. Since I already have numerous satellite dishes and installed them all myself, I suggested that he try a space on the roof that had a good LOS in-between two trees. He went up onto the roof and took measurements and then said "yes this spot would work". He then asked if he had to remove the DirecTV dish and I said I would like to keep it installed if possible. He said "good it would save him some time".

The worst part of the install was trying to get the coax into the basement. He wasn't sure where to drill, so I showed him where I thought he should drill to get to where I want the cables to enter the communications room. He kept asking "Are you sure?" and I said "yes, drill here". :) He did and the drill bit came through exactly where I wanted the cables to enter the room. He then had such a hard time trying to get a single coax into the hole he drilled into the basement that I wasn't about to ask him about running all 4 coax lines. He mounted the DPP44 switch outside near the coax entrance. I figured at some point I can always redo the installation and have the coax coming from all the dishes running through a conduit that would enter the communications room downstairs.

Since I don't yet have the 25' HDMI cable that I ordered to go from the communications room to the projector, he told me that he really isn't allowed to perform this installation, but he would anyways because he felt I knew alot about satellite systems and equipment.

For now I just have the receiver hooked up using coax (home connection) to the upstairs TV in the living room. I must say the picture is awesome! The whites are so white and the colors and detail really stand out. It even looks better than DirecTV.

Things I am happy about:
1) I received all the correct equipment (Dish 1000 plus, DPP44 switch and VIP722 HD DVR).
2) Picture is fantastic.
3) I got to keep my DirecTV dish and receivers to allow me to do testing on DirecTV receivers.
4) Install went ok and high signal strength was received.
5) Excellent graphics and receiver features.

Things that I am a little upset about:
1) As the installer stripped the coax in the communications room he dropped his strippers, pliers and DP44 power inserter onto the VIP722 receiver. He even filled out the paperwork on top of the receiver. I don't know about you, but I treat all my audio / video equipment with tender care (even when being leased) and hate when even a single scratch appears.

2) When I called Dish last month about the Cinemax for a penny a year deal they told me that since my equipment was not actually installed yet that I could simply subsitute the 3 free months of HBO / Cinemax for the Cinemax for a penny for 2 years. They just asked that I call once the equipment had been installed. Today after the equipment was installed I called and they told me that I wasn't allowed this deal. I even tried calling again and talked to another person, but they weren't able to help. They did say I could still get this deal once I had Dish for about 6 months. So, I guess I am ok with this.

3) Just like my DirecTV dish the Dish Network dish did not get grounded. Why don't installers ground these dishes anymore? Several years ago I know they did when I lived at different locations.

4) Tonight after going to channel 100 and entering the buzz trivia game the sound had disappeared. After trying menu options and everything under the sun I finally had to reset the receiver to gain back the sound. I hope this doesn't happen again.

Question:
My wife likes to view another program while recording another. Since the VIP722 is being used in dual mode supporting 2 TV's is this possible? I believe I read a thread once that explained how to switch between the tuners using the UHF remote.

Grounding the dish?, Whats that?.......were we suppose to ground dish's?.....Why didn't anyone say anything?............Gosh, Gee........I guess thats what that green wire in the back of my truck is for..........

Not sure if this will help, but I will give it a shot. First, I need some more information (or will make assumptions that hopefully will be helpful). We have all 5 of our tvs hooked up to our 722 and our 625. We did this by combining the outputs from each receiver into splitters and then running a cable out to each tv. While it is not 100% like we want it, it works. You would just need to switch the modulator channels so each tuner in the box is set to a different channel. If you are using the "Home Distribution" (Coax) output on the 722, you will need to turn the modulator on for Tuner 1 and then the Coax output will see Tuner 1 and 2 (simply by changing the channel on the tv).

As for TV1, you can (if you have extra inputs) run an RCA (Red, Yellow, White) cable from the 722 to the TV which would allow you to see both tuners by switching the input.

Hope that helps. If not, please provide more questions and I will try to answer them.

Absolutely, always!

OP, your entire AV system is at risk without the system being grounded. I would at least route the cables through a good quality surge protector in the meantime. I recommend always using a good surge protector.

I hate to say it but mabey he should call the installer back to ground off the switch/cable & dish........ I say that is a poor install if it aint grounded. If he didn't ground anything then I could just imagine how the install looks. Bet he didn't use pitchpatch & used staples on the cable not to mention clear barrels.......OMG

congrats and i really am jealous of that sign up special you got, man to get that and ad 722 I would flip if I could get that setup

I use single mode as I love picture in picture as I am always recording two shows while watching a third. Hell, I even played back a second show meaning I was recording two and playing back two at the same time. No idea how it even can handle that but it does

You going to get an ext HD and network the 722 ?

Dig through the menus and find "Record Plus" and make sure it's enabled. Now when something is going to be recorded, by default, and if TV2 is not being used, it will record on TV2's tuner. TV1 will be free to use for regular, live viewing.

Yes, I plan on doing so until I get time this spring to properly ground the dishes.

Thank you for the help. I believe what you suggested is exactly what I need to do. I want to sit down this afternoon in-between the football games and read the owner's manual in more detail.

My current setup (until I can get the HD projector downstairs setup in time for the superbowl) has the "home connection" output set to channel 60 and is attached to the TV in the living room using the TV2 UHF remote control. When a scheduled recording starts my wife's programming is interrupted. I believe this is when she would simply change the home connection channel to that setup for TV1.

Normally I would call, but I would rather just wait until the weather gets warmer and redo the installation myself. I will then place the DPP44 switch inside as well as ground the dish properly. The installer who came couldn't even drill a hole to get the coax into the house and wanted to know if my drill would work better. He even used my fish tape, electrical tape and I had to help pull the coax through the wall. I even setup the VIP722 receiver by myself to aid in the install.

It really was a great deal to get in on.

Current Solid Signal prices are as follows:

Dish 1000+ Dish = $369.99
VIP722 HD DVR Receiver = $439.99
DPP44 Multiswitch = $194.99
HD Programming for 6 Months = $120.00
HBO/Cinemax for 3 Months = $60.00
Reimbursed Installation Charge = $50
Coax and Misc Material = $20 (estimated)

Total Value = $1,254.97

Because we are currently only using TV2 I guess I would disable this option to have it always record using TV1?

Nope. You would want to go in and change the Default to Tuner 1 (so that it will try to record to Tuner 1 if possible.

However, if you turn on the Modulation to Tuner 1, you can set the TV to Tuner 1 and use Tuner 2 as the Default Record Channel (as you would be viewing either Tuner at anytime.

Personally, on our 2 receivers, we don't use Record Plus while it is in Dual mode (which we leave it in exclusively) as this allows which ever TV we set to record something to record that channel. We found that having Record Plus on made it so when we were in Bedrooms watching TV and the other person wanted something recorded you would either have to stop recording. Now with the setup we have, it could work to have it on, but we have gotten used to having it off so it could get more confusing to have it turned back on.
