Time to transfer archive to external HD (VIP612)

Just hooked up an external hard drive to my VIP612 receiver. Activated the hard drive, etc. and went to transfer (archive) the recordings on my receiver to the external drive.

Everything seems to be working but the system says it will take approximately 9 hours to transfer what is about 50GB worth of data. This seems like an outrageously long amount of time -- only about 1.5MB/s. The drive is capable of 50MB/s and the USB 2.0 transfer protocol is capable of at least 40MB/s -- in other words, the hardware should be capable of doing the transfer in less than half an hour, not nine hours.

Is this typical of transfer speeds, or should I be looking at something else as a possible problem?

Lots of processing required to securely encrypt that file so you can't playback on other unauthorized devices.

My mistake -- it was about 120GB, not 50GB. So the transfer rate is around 4MB/s -- still an order of magnitude below theoretical, but better.

Transfers in the other direction take just as long -- I assume it has to do the same re-encryption to put it back on the VIP612's hard drive?

That would be decryption since the int HDD isn't encrypted. The time you are listing seems a bit on the long side though.

Place your bets...7 new TMP HD channels at 110.
