I have come to enjoy the PQ of the New Mpeg4 HD channels and stay away from the Mpeg2 ones unless there is something I really have to watch. This morning on TNTHD I watched "The Thomas Crown affair", it was poor PQ, but watchable. But just now on "murder at 1600" green blocking right in the center of the F*ckin picture. Just now the entire 1/5 lower portion of the screen... SOLID GREEN!!!!!!!! A sign of Horrendous mpeg2 overcompression and bandwidth starving. This is just absurd! How can D* even charge us for this CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have done absolutely NOTHING to improve the PQ of existing mpeg2 channels.

until they move the mpeg-2 channels over to mpeg4 there is not a dam thing they can do for pq.and there not moving them to after sundayticket atleast is over if not later
I am not buying it. You are telling me they cannot split the incoming feeds of these channels before they downrezz them under Mpeg2 and then encode them to mpeg4 and put them on the new sat? Bologna. This should have been the first thing they did after it went live, instead of filling it up with PPVHD

I agree, i really wish they would do this sooner rather than later. I have been spoiled on Mpeg 4 sports. ESPN still looks about as good as any of the old channels, I just see how it could be better.

You know Cuban should have been suing over the PQ too. Theres no way a new user could look at HDnet and think "this is great PQ" in its current condition. And I am suppose to pay extra for this? and Universal? Their PQ is a joke on D*. But instead we are to absorb another price increase in January so that D* can fund the slew of HDPPV channels and HD RSN's on the new sat instead of taking care of its old core HD channels that we have suffered with for years. The channels we have subbed to for years go unimproved. As far as ESPNHD goes, it has been a mess for a long time. Our PQ took a back seat to locals, more PPV and then the ST bandwidth grab. Now it continues to take a backseat to more PPV channels. RSN's. Seems as though in D*'s prorities our PQ ranks dead last.

well i dont agree with that completely. The MPEG 4 stuff(most of it) is as good as anyone offers. On the others fair enough.

Yeah I have seen that before too but on Dish is dont not happen that much since most of their HD Channels are already on MPEG4. Maybe next time look at Dish.

Just being in MPEG 4 doesnt equate to great PQ. There are other factors that can degrade PQ and as of right now, in a comparison of mpeg 4 on both sat companies, D* wins(in most cases). Its simple bandwidth

How do you tell if it's MPEG 2 or MPEG 4? On Showtime for instance, there are duplicates of a channel and I just wonder if one is MPEG 4 or MPEG 2 but don't know how to tell. Thanks.

All of the new ones are mpeg 4, the old are mpeg 2. The only exceptions are the old channels that have been remapped to new numbers. They are still mpeg 2 right now

Thanks, Msmith. I knew the channels in the 70's range were old, but wasn't sure about the Showtime ones like 537, 540 and 543. I was watching something on 537 and it was also on 543. So I switched back and forth to see which looked better but I couldn't tell a difference.

Pains me to say it, but I agree with Vurbano  These had better be moved to MPEG4 prior to the package spin-offs!

Even just the ESPN's moving over would make me happy.

I have another question:
What are the chances of getting those newly added HD CH's with 5.1 DD(or upgraded to 5.1 DD)?
Thanks
