Think about wally boxes

So i have question IF i where to trade in my h3 and 4k joeys for 4 Wally would and get each of them a external hdd would I be charged $7x4 even if they have HDD attach to them to record?

are the 1 tuner or 2?

I am paying 44$ for 2xH3 and 2x4k Joey I did this reduncy purposes and to keep other peoples recording off box I attach too. Frankly I miss the days where Dish has 2 tuner solo box and every box served only 1 tv. but Dish pretty done much done away by that each one those box IF you can even get them anymore 15$ ea. Not even cable charges that much for follow boxes. I can 3-6 tunner solo box from spectrum for 6$ each box I am not fan of this 1 box serves as DVR and reset are slaves, make for very messing DVR window, special when people record and dont watch or delete anything

Frack the only reason I even switch to Hopper system was to Stop dish from charging 15$ x4 for 4 solo boxes I had way back when they did those changes.

Hello, tsunami2311. There is a one-time fee to tag your account with the External DVR Service for the use of an external hard drive on any active Wally on the account. This fee is $40.00. There is no monthly DVR fee with this feature. The external hard drive would not be adding a tuner, so it would be a 1 tuner setup.

If you add the DVR service and an EHD, it will turn the Wally into a 2 tuner receiver. Add an OTA dongle, and you get 2 more tuners!

If you buy the Wallys, the monthly charge would be $5 for each additional Wally on your account.

The Wally is a great option, the Hopper is overkill (imo) especially in the world of streaming. The monthly fees alone are enough to push me away.

If you have been with Dish long enough, then you are likely grandfathered with no monthly fee for the first Wally receiver on your account. After the first one, the monthly fees would depend on whether the Wally are purchased or leased. So, it would be $7 x 3 = $21 for four leased Wally, or $5 x 3 = $15 if at least three of the Wally are purchased. Or, you could do a combination of leased and purchased Wally, if you wish.

Wally receivers are 2-tuner, but the second tuner can only be used for recording. So, the EHD and DVR activation code would be necessary in order to use the second tuner on each Wally. Otherwise, each Wally without a hard drive would only act as a single-tuner box.

1. Hopper has a problem, Zip, Zero, Nada TV.
2. Hard Drive goes all your programs gone unless previously put on an EHD.
3. Can't speak for the Wally but my 3 Tuner VIP Receivers have been rock solid for years now two months ago replacing one for the first time in four years. Pretty good for receivers built soo very long ago.
4. Depending could be cheaper - not everyone needs the Hopper. (NOT knocking the Hopper)
5. If you have always had non Hopper set-up no need for new set-up just replace what you have. (Yes you still can)
5A. If you have a cabin or vacation home etc with an existing VIP (non 211) receiver no need to change that set-up either with a Hopper account compatible receiver
6. Hopper has some fantastic innovations. BUT - the VIP receivers have a couple of things I use the Hopper does not. We just has a thread about one of them - changing the name of recorded programs.

To this point, I agree that it is Dish's arbitrary restrictions on which Hopper models they allow to be activated on the same account at the same time, that makes the Hopper system really inconvenient. My setup, for example, has an original model Dish 1000+ fed to a DPP44 switch, which then cascades to a DPH42 switch. So, technically, I can hook up just about any combination of receivers I want, all using only a single dish. However, due to Dish's restrictions, with certain models of Hopper on the account, it prevents other models of Hopper or ViP DVR's from being active at the same time. Having a Hopper active also limits the number of stand-alone (ViP211 or Wally) receivers allowed to only two at a time, even though it is possible (and relatively easy) to hook up more than that.

On my account, Dish even restricts what Hopper features are available (removing DVR functions while the Hopper is activated) just because I also have a ViP222k active on the account at the same time as the Hopper 3. This same DVR-feature restriction has also applied to every other model of Hopper or Wally that I have tried. This situation may be unique to just my account, though.

Granted, Dish is not going to want to install such a complex system (involving multiple switches) for every customer. However, for those of us who have the knowledge of how to hook it up, and have invested the money in purchasing the equipment (such as I have done) then we should be allowed to activate whatever combination of receivers we want to have, as long as it will still technically work.

It's weird because there was no announcement until techs started complaining about not being able to modify Work Orders calling for 211's to be used for migrations instead of Wallys.

OK, but his question was about having Wally's and DVR at every TV, and that is the context of my response. Of course if you don't want DVR, no need for Hopper. But I'll address each point:

1. Hopper failures are fairly rare. Hardly a concern.
2. Get an EHD if you are that worried. The Wally option requires buying multiple EHDs anyway...
3. If anything, Wally's are less stable than Hopper3. He isn't asking about VIP equipment, and it is next to impossible to get anymore anyway. They are no longer supported by Dish, and Dish want's everyone into the Hopper/Wally generation of receivers.
4. He might save $10 or so a month, but it would take a while to pay off all the EHDs. Plus what a pain not being able to access recordings in all rooms.
5. He Has an H3 and Joeys..... Getting VIP equipment is very difficult, sometimes impossible, and any day they could cut that off entirely. And who wants almost 20 year old tech? Most likely he would have to buy it outright, if he can find it.
5A. Again, my response was to his question. That is not what he has.
6. I can't argue there might be a feature or 2 that has been dropped and some people might want. But that is like saying, I would rather have this 90's car instead of this 2018 because it has a cigarette lighter.... The VIP DVRs are so dated.

This is why Wally is the superior option. If the Wally dies, all of your recordings are already on EHD. The flip-side of that is if your EHD starts to die, there is no way to use the Wally to transfer those recordings to a new EHD however.

Agreed, and that is why I suggested (in the What Would Make The Equipment Better thread) that Dish should find some way to implement that functionality by linking Wally receivers.
