and also provide upscaled SD games when HD is unavailable.

You can do that yourself with your STB!

They only list 3 CBS games in HD and 5 games in HD for FOX.

CBS only does 3 per week, Fox can do up to 6. The reason there is not a 6th game this week is because the NO/NYG game was originally supposed to be on Fox, now it is being broadcast by ABC/ESPN.

The reason local games are shown on your local network affiliate and not on the D* ST channels is mainly for advertising purposes. They want you to see the commercials for your "Metro INSERTCITYHERE Ford Dealer" and such.

There's simply not enough hd sat trucks to go around (each truck is a huge amount of money, but it's coming down in price like everything else in tech). Though in theory a eigth game could be put into production with movement of nyg/no, but it would be risky and very time crunched to set up.

I don't think you understand what 'upscaling' is. Sending a 480p signal to the hdtv is not upscaling.

Upscaling is when the 480p signal is modified, with scan lines inserted and the some smoothing algorithm applied, so the dvi carries a 720p or 1080i signal to the hdtv input. There are a number of upscaling dvd players available, but I do not know of any D* stb's that upscale.

Upscaling can happen at the stb, or at the head-end. Football games shown with sidebars on ch 80-88 are upscaled. The picture is 4x3, but it's much sharper than 480p even though it's not HD.

The Sony SAT-HD300 does not upscale. For SD channels, it sends the 480p digital signal along the dvi to my hdtv. The Hitachi hdtv detects a 480p signal and shows exactly that: a large, edgy 480p picture.

I'm saying they should at least upscale the SD games so subscribers get a sharper image.

Your set top box will upscale SD channels 10801 or 720p, just read you manual!

No, mine doesn't. Not all STB's are the same. How about you read it and report back before you sound-off.

The AUTO-DVI setting just flat converts the 480i input to "monitor type" output (in my case 1080i). There is no smoothing involved by the STB.

When I compare SD programming on ch 2 (CBSE, SD) to ch 80 (CBSE, HD), the head-end upscaled image on ch 80 is crisp and smooth while the ch 2 image looks like a jigsaw puzzle.

They are not upscaling from analog channel 2. They are broadcasting to you what is on channel 2-1 (56) D is giving you what CBS is giving them. I don't know if you would have noticed this yesterday but. On channel 80 on D they were playing the conformation hearings almost all day. While on the analog channel they played the regular line up. OTA on channel 2 was the regular line up while OTA 2-1 was the hearing. I hope that helps clear that up for you.

Than change the setting to output 1080i all the time when watching football, it can be done I had the sony box.

Check the manual page 11 :smug

I was looking @ 11 earlier.... it's a better picture.

Truth be told, I still have a philosophical problem with paying a premium for HD games. Part because regardless of whether they're available, they charge for the package but some games I want to see are not in HD.

My other reason is that the HD package should entitle subscribers to the HD feeds from all of their other subscriptions (including ST). Should not have to pay extra -- twice -- for the HD feeds of ST games.

This part we ALL agree on.

I agree, that's why I dropped the Sunday Ticket, which I did have since it became available, just for the principal of the matter.

Well, I guess it's mines turn to comment. The travesty is about to enter week 2 and I am eagerly anticipating the glorious high definition picture that will soon be showing in my living room. Yes, I paid the $49 dollars for my SF package. There was no way that I was going to boycott receiving the games in High Definition. I think this argument is tomfoolery. I paid 2700 dollars for my tv, I paid 600 dollars for my high def receiver. I paid for my ST as I have for the past 6 years. I am a relocated Bears fan who has no desire to watch the Giants or the Jets. I play fantasy football for fun and enjoy watching any game that I need to watch. So after investing all that money, all that time, and not only being a spectator to pass time, but having a vested interest as a fan, not only for my beloved Bears, but also of fantasy football, there was no way that I wasn't going to add the 49 dollars to see some great football in high definition. Last week was great and I'm looking forward to this week. I'm sure my family is sick of hearing me laugh and scream this is unbelievable.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with protest. I agree with speaking out against overcharging and exploitation. I think there are avenues for that. But don't blame D* for doing anything more than what any other capitalist company would do. You go to six flags and you're a junkie to ride the most awesome ride and guess what is in the middle of the park. A bungee jump and it cost $25 dollars to jump. Even after I paid to get in the park, yep. Guess what; they have a line! Why, cause it's the most awesome ride and thrill seekers abound. Go buy a car and guess what you can load yourself down with? Options. Sign up for fantasy football at Yahoo and it's free, but it's gonna cost you to get the stat tracker! So, why wouldn't you expect them to bring the person who loves to watch High Definition and pair it up with what most people want to see in High Definition and then charge for it!

The forum is great to get people together and to show a sign of force against things that are not good, but some of you are either being sarcastically ridiculous or you find "The Young and the Restless" good high definition viewing. Like I said last week was awesome! I'm looking forward to this week! Dire Straits need to revise their song, "I Want My HDTV"

Peace Out......

I don't bitch about my D* service. I've had good experiences in 5 years. In this instance, I do blame D* because it's a half-assed charge.

Whatever I've spent on equipment does not justify pissing-away money on HD channel just for the sake of having it available in my home. I'm not going to line-up, hold my wallet open, and plead to be sodomized.

I agree. And while I would drop it as a protest, I am not the football fan in this house and, trust me, he'd never give up the Ticket on principle! My real gripe is that last season, we did get what HD games were on the schedule, but this year, we don't. IOW, they removed part of our programming without any reduction in price, and used the HD games to pad the Superfan package. We already pay extra for the sparse HD programming.

It's most irritating to have paid $1,000 for an hd dvr specifically for football games and then, after one season, have those games taken away and added to a subscription package.

I agree with a previous poster who said that they'd be willing to pay ala carte for HD games. Or, I know that the fan in this house would.

This is the exact reason I dropped the Sunday Ticket in protest. I've had D* for 10 years and this was the only time I've ever considered dropping D* altogether which I almost did. I told D* this when I cancelled the Sunday Ticket.

JPN, you are exactly right. You shouldn't have to... are your words. And guess what, you don't have to. You don't have to line up. You don't have to be violated. Great! You got something free last year that this year is not free. Boy, that's never happened before. Museums use to be free on Friday's. The Zoo use to be free. I use to pay $3 for a ticket to a Cubs game and it use to cost me less than $20 to fill my tank. D* is offering a service that some are willing to pay for while others are not. I'm willing. At some point they might price me out of the ticket and then I'll have to start going to the zoo on Sundays, but enough with the whining. Call D* and voice your concern, but get over it already.

Hey you know what, go down to your local Costco, Sam's Club, or whatever you have in your area and for 2 or 3 weeks line up for their free sample foods. This will be your lunch for those 2 or 3 weeks. You should save about $49. Take that $49 dollars and buy the Super Fan. Odds are next year the price will go back up to $99 so you'll have to add a few weeks. Your other option is to go to a site that teaches you ways to avoid paying those sinister capitalist pigs who have the audacity to charge for TV.

Wow. You've mastered sarcasm, scolding, and condescension. Almost everyone on this forum seems able to stay in control, treat others with respect, and flame elsewhere. I thought this might actually be a flame-free forum. You've taught me otherwise, here and in your other posts.

I'm sure if I've crossed a line with my protest, the MODERATORS would not hesitate to notify (or censor) me.

Your skills and intervention are not needed.
