The "new" iPad Announcement / Discussion Thread

I'd think the stock dropping is more akin to the ocean drawing back before a tsunami.
Apple's stock drops in approximate proportion to the amount that the new product disappoints. If the stock doesn't drop much (as it didn't), the product is most likely a ho-hum.

The iPhone 4s saw the stock value drop over 20 points so it was a major disappointment (compared to the community generated speculation).

I can't remember an Apple introduction that didn't result is at least a temporary drop in stock price.

Given how many iPhones they sold, and HOW much profit they made, that "disappointment" is hilarious. I think if Tim Cook farted, the market would have dropped 20 points.

Yeah my 7 month pregnant wife had a similar attitude until I told her she could have my iPad 2. Then she went from "You bought the new iPad without consulting with me first?!" to "Okay show me how to get the keyboard working with it (the iPad 2.)"

Now we need to find a way to unload her crappy Toshiba Thrive..

I asked mine if she would use it and she said most likely not as we have a laptop. I tried to make her see how much easier it would be with a tablet if she was laying in bed surfing the web but I lost that argument.

:whip: jk

Weird thing is my wife has 2 laptops and a smartphone yet she still wanted a tablet. Her big thing is portability and using whenever and wherever, which isn't easy with an old school macbook or a 17" HP laptop.

LOL! If you look at it that way, I don't remember a day when Apple doesn't meander a few dollars a share based on totally unrelated nonsense. Some of them result in $10 swings. When the stock swings $20 I buy when it's down and sell when it's up but I only ever sell 10% of my holdings as Apple is a safe bet all the way to $700 a share. It closed today up $11.30 a share. By the time it gets to $700 a share we'll need to re-evaluate the metric and establish a new target based on future product announcements. For now there are three- Enterprise business for iphone and ipad, Apple TV, and the iphone 5.

In for a black 32GB Verizon. Just ordered this morning, but the order already shows processed and still has the March 16th delivery date.

I really don't like the name "New IPAD" Is this the last in the iPAD line of development? I sure hope not. So what will the next version be called The "New IPAD 2" followed with Newer IPAD and then Newest IPAD. Then in the tradition of names from the past- How about Different Ipad? Then New Different IPAD. etc etc Apple had no problem in naming each generation of iphone with a number so why not ipad? I think if Steve was still with us, he would throw a hissy fit over this. While I don't think the name will hurt sales, it will add considerable confusion in the support end of the device, especially after the next generation of ipad is released. Give me the number, please! It's easier.

You should carefully note two things:

1. The iPhone 4S was widely reviled as not nearly the step forward that the faithful thought it would be (not reaching the level of iPhone 5 being atop the list).
2. The faithful are fickle and will buy whatever Apple offers (even if it is canned/bottled Tim Cook farts).

Widely reviled by the media, pretty much anybody who got a 4S was pretty darn happy. And regardless, they sold 37 MILLION iPhones in the 4th quarter.

Why Doesn't the iPad Have a New Name? - MarketWatch Video

It is genius. Its the iPad; Sequels usually fail, but this is the "iPad" - the great, successful iPad. And its completely in the Apple model of thinking. I owned a 2nd generation iPod, a 4th generation iPod, my kid has a 2nd and 4th gen iPod Nano. Same with iPod Touch. OR with the MacBook Pro, or iMac, or Air, or Mini. The brand is the name, the generation is the iteration. Its not the iPod touch 4, its the iPod touch. WHY NOT the iPad (3rd gen); as they are advertising it if you go into the store to buy it.

This way it is always the iPad, it does not have to be the iPad 3, 4, 12, or 15. Just the newest, latest iPad. Makes total sense.

IMO Apple will be making "bigger steps forward" with the iPad not the iPhone in the future.

They're doing it like they do the iPods, where it's just done by Generations. If you order the new iPad online, it lists it as "iPad (3rd Generation)."

That ship has sailed. They've already started with different names. Count on it: Some crook is going to sell "iPads" at a really good price, people will think they're getting a deal, but will get the original iPad. "Refurbished?"

I think people will be inclined to name it, so as to distinguish WHICH iPad they've got. This ain't just a little music player.

I think people will, and indeed PROPOSE that we, call it the iPad 2012, or iPad 12 for short.

I didn't buy a 64/4G iPad for my wife for it to be considered only trivially different from the original iPad. SWMBO would not like that.

AH! I see you're right. I did not recall seeing "3rd generation" when I ordered, so I just went thru a new order (part way) and only on the far right under the order summary does it say "3rd generation." But it does say it.

BTW, I noticed it now says "ships by March 19." Glad I ordered early. Anyone interested in getting one early should move on it.

I'll have an iPad 2012, and have an iPhone 3GS. But no Macs allowed. :p

With a Mac, you'd have total convergence. But that is for a different thread. :)

Apparently the switch from March 16 to Mar 19 for delivery dates happened this morning sometime.
