I can see Apple deciding that thunderbolt is a fading technology. It is great in theory, but when it does not gain widespread hardware support from the rest of the industry its days are probably numbered. USB-C sounds like it could easily replace it as long as Intel (and AMD) puts support for it in the base chipset so that it is eventually very cheap.

According to someone I know at Intel, it is more likely that Apple is snubbing Intel (understanding that Thunderbolt is an Intel invention).

If it wasn't a poke at someone they don't get along with, I can't really see Apple adopting anything that was widely available. Just look at the handheld connector that they're using at the moment. Remember Apple Desktop Bus?

Considering that they have close to 50% of the smartphone market in the US, the lightning connector is not a niche product like the thunderbolt...

I didn't suggest that it was niche -- simply another connection iteration in a long line of them that aren't adopted outside the Apple ecosystem.

And if you are only working within the Apple ecosystem this isn't a problem. I really don't care what ports are on Windows PCs because I don't use Windows PCs. My backup drive is hooked to my iMac via Thunderbolt 2 because it's twice as fast as USB 3 and the port is there. For those things that won't work on Thunderbolt 2 I have the slower USB 3.

I was looking at the Windows 7 updates available on my computer today and noticed that there was KB2990124 that was 3mb. Then went and looked at my Wife's laptop and he has the same update. Here's the link to that updates explanation on the Microsoft Knowledge Base site:

So that update contains stuff to allow you to update to a newer version of Windowz, which means that it won't be much longer before Win 10 goes RTM. I see up the page here that AMD says July. Rumor I read says June so either way it won't be much longer.
