The End of VOOM?

"Business as usual during this transition with the promises of greater HD channels in March. We are continuing our commitment to our customers and looking forward to Voom's continued growth as the leader in HD programming." I think in a nut shell this is what they have been saying.

have a funny feeling that this means that they might be becomming a content provider instead of a service provider. so that you maybe able to get a lot more hd channels no matter who you service provider is.

just a though

Dish-no birds going up

E* may use the space for local HD or something else but the chance of them catching D* seems unlikely-12-15 months ago they had to pay D* 600 million for a failed buy out that the FCC did not approve(which I think that D* knew to make money) and to start coming up with the rev to launch new birds for programing seems very unlikely-that was the best reason to acquire the VOOM sat for 200m-cost more than that to get one in the works.Meanwhile D* I think used the monies that E* had to give them to buy 4 birds to launch in the next two years and to take a large precentage of the market for HD locals and HD programing

I found this post on another thread interesting......

I used to work for Mr.Ergan. I talked to Bob Johanasberg who is a Mid leval marketing manager in Colorado at the old Mall for Charlie. He said the word around E* is that Charles is helping Dolan and Voom and really is buying off the sat at 61.5 because he wants to expand some locals and international and his bird is going bad. It is giving capital to Elder Dolan and other son to aid in keeping Voom going.
Now I do believe this . However Charlie gives to no one. I wonder if this is a plan to further VOom growth until the time he gobbles money dead company up for a cheaper price.

I would not cancel that Voom install yet. I believe game is still very much ON!

klen, how is voom going to keep transmitting without a satellite??? I don't care how much money they have or how much help they get, if they don't have a bird they can't transmit anything.

I believe Voom is going to lease space back from Echostar on Rainbow 1 while they transition their Voom programming over to the AMC 6 sat where they have 11 transponders leased. AMC 6 would also give the west coast a little better look angle at the sat. Voom is not dead or dying by any stretch of the Nay Sayers imaginations. Stay tuned for late breaking news! :)

hrmm...what do you know that we don't?? The news stories specifically stated that voom was to be shut down. Not only that, I thought their financing would be cut at the end of January. With no sat, no financing, and the news stories seeming to confirm a shutdown, why do you think something different will happen?

I hope you're right but what makes you say that?

mine is just a hunch i have, being how adimint charles d. is about the whole voom project. i personally feel he is willing to sell the cable company to see voom succeed.

just my .02

I am starting to think that something like that is going to happen.

Think about it:
The memo the day before the sale, the prepared message from the csrs about new channels and DVR in March, the continued programming and related expenses (including HDNEWS).

They are still paying csrs. They are still paying the HDnewsanchors. They are still incurring expenses, and oddest thing of all, they are still doing installs. If they were going away soon, why would they still be doing all of this?

A very good point and my feeling also. you really have to read between the lines. don't forget the constant stories of Time-Warner wanting Cablevision. Stock goes up ... Charlie D and loyal Son Tom sell some shares, rent some satellite space from Echo on the same bird for HD or a cross agreement with Echo to provide them the HD in exchange for carrying SD to VOOM customers. Something really big to knock the socks off of customers and non-customers of VOOM and Dish and knock D* and son Jimmy on their ARSE.

Still Seeing VOOM Commercials

Unless VOOM prepaid commercials why would they still be airing them. I have seen another one on GS.

Could it be that VOOM will supply E* with HD, and E* supplies VOOM with SD because the location is the same. The original installer actually used my old E* dish that was pointed at 61.5. Maybe we will all ge the superdish sattelite dish and then VOOM could supply locals to everyone.

I remember seeing an interview where the heads of DBS companies and cable ops were sitting on a row (Charlie next to Dolan Jr.) and Charlie made the comment that he hope sometime in the future Voom and Dish could find a way of sharing bandwith.

This might be a pipe dream, but I can't imagine Dolan giving upon VOOM so soon, just when things are about to get much better. Something has to be up.... Wake me up if I am dreaming, but this would give Charlie a jump on Murdoch on the HD side, especially since he is whining to the FCC about the feasibility of D* HD promises/statements.

Do some research before you say things that are not true, E* has 2 brand new birds just launched and now in test phase (and 1 more yet to go up in the next few months), they also have 3 more on order over the next couple of years, but unlike D*, no one knows what E* has planned with the new birds.

Most of the HDNEWS anchors are gone. The people have doing HDNEWS now are Cablevision's local anchors from their NEWS 12 Long Island Cable channel. I am sure these people are already on their payroll.

The reason I believe this is the sale of the hardware to free up some of the financed burden. Also to get some more wiggle room with the cash. Charles Dolan sold off a bunch of stock in Cablevision about a month ago. He is worth quite a bit of money and I believe he is going to take the project private before giving up on it. Maybe he is looking for a partner or maybe one is already in his camp. We will know soon. :)

.02s Worth

Well I guess it's a good thing I didn't take down my BUD after I had VOOM installed in the beginning of the month. It took me a while to read all of the 32 pages in this thread, but when they pull the plug it will be a dark day for HDTV! If the OTA tuner dies on the VOOM box I'll hook up my Integra 910s for my locals again.
I cancelled my E* after I had VOOM installed and told the CSR that I didn't want to pay the $5.00 per month charge to keep my account active. ($25 reconnect fee). After being a subscriber for 5 years they offered me a free upgrade to their HD receiver to stay. Still not enough HD channels compared to VOOM.
I figure that even if they shut down tomorrow the only thing I lost was $1. I sent in my check last week for the first month of service and for the price I was very satisfied. Last night I was suprised that even during a blizzard (17" of snow and limmited visibility) I had no loss of signal! I never had that luck with E*. Even with my BUD I had to take the broom out to clean the dish to keep my signal strong.

Cablevision also has several orbital slots that cover the western parts of the U.S., a $740 million contract to buy more satellites from Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), and contracts to lease capacity from SES Global SA (008808732.LUX).

Cablevision, in its statement, said it "will continue to explore strategic alternatives" for its programming, equipment and spectrum assets. A Cablevision representative wasn't immediately available to comment.

But the latest purchase doesn't mean EchoStar won't be looking for still more capacity. Analysts said that DirecTV still has more capacity as well as more favorable satellite slots that allow coverage over the whole of the continental U.S.

Rainbow's 61.5 degree slot will give EchoStar more capacity over the eastern and midwestern parts of the U.S. but won't do much to bolster its coverage of the West Coast.

The transaction must pass regulatory review before EchoStar can start using the new satellite. Spokesman Steve Caulk said the deal covers only the satellite and spectrum, not Voom's existing customers. He declined to comment on whether the company is eyeing any other Cablevision assets.

Hi, i was just wondering why E* did'nt buy the orbital slots from cablevision?
and what will happen regarding the lockheed contract?, i read somewhere it was cost $100 million to get out of. Would it not of been more sensible for E* to take over the contract? It does seems quite strange that Voom would order 5 more Ku-band sats only 3 months ago only to pull the plug?

Interesting observation.
