The 2009 MLB All-Star Game

For anyone who has been to an All-Star Game, what was the experience like? (I know Wozniak went to the 1971 game and Bill went to the 1999 game- I wonder if Salsa went to the 1990 game in Chicago.)

YEP! My 1st year with the old Chicago Sportschannel! It was fun and only my 2nd assignment. Hung around the batting cages and watched the players hit a little bit when we set-up pre-game and post game interview area(I still had to do SOME work....LOL!)

The only games I went to that compare were the World Cup of Hockey games in 1996 I think...or 1998, I forget. It was wild. World Cup of Hockey is not like the NHL All-star game, the games were played for keeps.

US vs. Canada in Philly, U-S-A U-S-A all night long, Eric Lindros (a mega-God in Philly at the time) being booed vociferously (I was not booing Mark Messier), very serious stuff.

Then US vs. Russia at the Garden two nights later. Another wild evening, so much at stake.

I went to the '89 All-Star game in Anaheim and was able to watch Bo Jackson go deep and win MVP, a highlight of the 80's being in an Angel fan.

We are 9 days from the Midsummer Classic, and with the rosters finalized (other than the final player in each league that can be selected online), I want to start Midsummer Classic talk.

Let's start with a few questions:

1. For anyone who has been to an All-Star Game, what was the experience like? (I know Wozniak went to the 1971 game and Bill went to the 1999 game- I wonder if Salsa went to the 1990 game in Chicago.)

2. How do you feel about the All-Star Game itself?

3. What are the chances one of the hometown Cardinal players hits a homer? The last times a player played a big role in an All-Star game in his own stadium were Pedro in 1999 and Sandy Alomar in 1997.

4. Do you think the National League will FINALLY snap their drought and win? (Personally, I think this is the year they will get off the schnide.) They have not won one since 1996. Here's what was going on the last time the National League won a Midsummer Classic:

The Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bulls, and Kentucky basketball were champions in their respective sports

Kevin Garnett had just completed his rookie season

The coaches of the four major league sports teams in Beantown were Bill Parcells, M.L. Carr, Kevin Kennedy, and Steve Kaspar

The Nintendo 64 was introduced

The only "real" All Star game is MLB's. They're playing for something, and the players actually give an effort.

How big a blow to the AL is this?:

I watched the game, or the pre-game I should say, up until the point that Obama was introduced. That is the time I changed the channel and I won't be looking back.

Pretty good game thus far. The AL scored 2 in the first due to sloppy defense by the NL and the NL scores 3 in the second to take a 3 - 2 lead.

Crawford robs Hawpe of a HR to keep the game tied.

This game, like last years game will be a close one in which either team can easily win. If the AL happens to win everyone will use this win to show that the AL is still dominate. I have a different take. Last year and this year show that the leagues are pretty evenly matched when you put their best players together. Proven by the close games regardless of who wins.

One of the best defensive outfields I ever saw was Eric Davis, Billy Hatcher, and Paul O'Neill

Davis and O'Neill must have been quite busy. I remember when Hatcher was in Boston, thinking that the Hatcher/Greenwell combo was the worst defensive left field/centerfield pair I had ever seen.

I thought Andre Dawson, Warren Cromarte and Ellis Valentine made a pretty good outfield.

wow, MLB is Nuckin Futs! I ran an errand and though maybe I'd miss the first 1/2 inning while I was away and it turns out I was way early when I got back! Game started about 47 after the hour instead of my guestimate of maybe 25 mins past the hour.

Why doesn't FOX/MLB start the telecast in the 7pm ET hour to get all that garbage out of the way and then be ready for first pitch around 8pm ET?

Wow Carl Crawford came thisclose to calling our President Osama Bin Laden. I'm sure he was nervous as the whole stadium could hear the interview, but that would have been bad.

He said he was proud to meet 'Osama-Bam'.

Lol. I had to rewind the DVR multiple times, but that is exactly what I heard too. What a goof.

Was he doing his Kennedy impression? :D

I can not believer Maddon didn't let Time Wakefield pitch in what was his first and probably only All-star game. He couldn't have pitched instead of Burhle or Jackson? Very disappointed, seeing him pitch was the main reason I tuned in last night. He sure made sure all the Rays got in the game, though.

Yeah, Bill and MrsMSmith can't be happy about that.

agreed....I figured when they did the intros at :13 after the game would start by the bottom of the hour.....wrong

Thank goodness it was a quick game
