I wonder if you couldn't use an old dishnetwork rec for a "pointing device" on most of the KU birds we watch. I remembered having one outside when I was trying to find AMC1 awhile back, having the dish rec on its setup screen, and seeing the satellite name displayed down at the bottom. of course on the dish setup it was saying "wrong satellite-AMC1" Wouldnt that work on any of these other sats--dont they all have some kind of ID beacon that rec would pick up?

hmm....that is very interesting idea.

I am wondering if it is determind by having TPs that are around SR 20000 or if there is some sort of standard ID beamed down from each site.

Im going to try that tomorrow. Got a cold snap here in the deep south for the next few, so I dont plan on doing much else (with the early garden prep) .
I seem to remember hitting SatMex-5,6 or something like that back when I first got Dishnetwork in 2004, when I was aiming for 119 . Anyway Im putting up a primestar on AMC5 for the horses (the racing ones not mine) and I'll see if that works tomorrow..

Remember....the NYC channels are starting to be encrypted (about half now). Still some racing there now, but not sure how much longer

reference material

In his thread, Theoretical Arc Trackers, Colbec came up with some pretty good ideas.
I though just being able to see the BEV + Dish birds at 82, 91, 110, 119, 148 * would at least give you some reference points . . .
...and that is very do-able with nothing but an old Dish/BEV receiver!

* yea, there are others, but these are all circular, not mixed format.

Anole-you're right, I forgot about that part. (circular). I'll try with a linear lnb first to see if the dishnetbox can pick up the beacon or not. It'll be good to know if it only works with a circular lnb.
