Tech Chat Recap May 14th

No...ur not missing anything. If you don't subscribe to Cinemax you won't get CinemaxHD. They omitted that fact.

I was more curious about the ability to program your receiver with DishOnline. Is that what I think it is or some awful mis-quote or misunderstanding? I logged onto DishOnline and didn't see where I could do that. Insight anyone?

The "Cinemax HD" screen capture says exactly the same thing as their original press release http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=68854&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=996111
Cinemax HD is located on DISH Network Channel 9458 and is available to customers who subscribe to DishHD programming, only a $20 add-on to digital definition programming packages.

According to both, there is no requirement to subscribe to Cinemax to get Cinemax HD, if you already subscribe to DishHD. Regardless of this, I still see it as "RED" in the guide.

I agree. According to the screen cap there is no mention of having to subscribe to Cinemax to get Cinemax HD if you meet the other requirements. You think E* would be a little more careful in reviewing their wording. Its definitely misleading especially to those that arent "in the know".

So, if I want Wildblue, everything is in place and I just call Dish to schedule the install?

It may vary with the region of the country but, yes, Wildblue installs through Dish are now available. If you check the Wildblue web site it will show you a list of local installers that include Dish network retailers.

Here in western Pennsylvania, I had Wildblue installed by Dish a couple of weeks ago for $200 (includes the hardware and labor). But be aware that they will only install the modem on a single computer -- they will not connect to a router and set up for your entire home network. I could not get the modem to work through my router (it would only work with a single computer connected directly to the modem) and had to pay to have a tech guy come in to set it up. Now we have three computers in the house on a wired network that can use the modem simultaneously. However, we still have not been able to get a wireless laptop to connect to the modem through the router. If you google some of the tech web sites that deal with Wildblue you'll see lots of complaints about the difficulty of getting the modem to work with routers -- but I do not know how representative all these complaints might be.

As far as the quality of the WildBlue service, so far we are satisfied. There have been a few short periods where the connection was very slow or where service was interupted and we have also had to reset the modem a couple of times. But in general we find the speed to be good (slower than cable or DSL but MUCH faster than are old phone modem connection). I have the the fastest 1.5 mb package and find that just surfing general (primarily text-based) web sites is not significantly faster but download speeds for graphics, video, and large files is dramatically faster.

Another thinng to consider is that you have to make a long term commitment to Dish/Wildblue and there is really no guarantee of the speed or quality of the serice. So if you are not satisfied you cannot just cancel service and return the product.

Hope this is helpful,

Tom Conelly

No one asked about the 622 USB HDD support?
I'm sure plenty of people asked.

When I did so last time, the lady took my question, put me on hold, came back and asked me to state the question again, said she'd never heard of it, I said it was announced two years ago as coming some time LAST YEAR, she said she would check on it and let me know, could I please hold. Then she came back and said it was coming "in June". I clarified "June 2007 right?" to which she said yes.

They are not letting this get asked on the air though for whatever reason.

Which RSNs are likely to end up on 61.5 due to impossible to poor coverage of their areas by the 129 bird?

Anyone care to speculate?

I'm interested because I'm in the Midwest but am hitting 61.5 instead of 129, so I know I won't be able to get FSN-Midwest or FSN-North. If some of the eastern RSNs end up on 61.5, then that would be attractive to me.

Sportsnet New York is uplinked on the 61.5 and according to the press release of 5/4 is supposed to be offered this summer.

I get both Fox sports Florida and sunshine network. Although the content looks great on both there is really very little programming on the channels. I am sure that in the nexg year we will see an increase in new live programing because everyone is getting HD sets in their houses so it is beneficial to th networks to use their newly purchased or about to be purchase cams .
BTW I didn't think that there was any such thing as and HD bird. Aren't all satellites basically repeaters? content or encyrption does not really matter except for the badwidth they take up.

Correct. Its just like a big mirror in the sky, it reflects what ever is beamed to it. Does not matter if its HD or SD. :)

ok, I missed this in my first post but I realy woudl like to see the usb to HDD storage. I don't feel like looking for them but I dont think E* plans on letting us use the storage on any receiver othe than the one that it was recorded on. I am sue this is for copyright reasons which I can understand totally. I will give i on that just to increase my archiving. Of course it would be nice to archive to dvd's but I will take what I can get with the limitations put on by the MPAA an the lilke. I did like the idea of linking more than one reciever even if it is like models that must be used, at least I have it and I plan on having 622 or the like on everything anyway.

As for the raysat, I see a definate use for it in my SUV with 3 tv's, I wonder if it is possible to use another 311 on the house account and use it in my truck for full progamming? Of course I would pay for the original receiver and a package but sometime its nice to just have all my programming that I have at home. Mark at Dish Depot told me that I will actually be able to make my unit and make my SUV a hotspot for wi fi, I am sure this added to the overall price but it is a nice addition if it is real.

I was very encouraged by the chat. They learned ther lesson on talking to us about speculative products so I do understand their reluctance to tak certain calls, they don't want to get held to a timeline (whole other story) and although we bitch about not having products out sooner, we bitch when we are there "beta tester" becaust it gets released under pressur and its not ready for prime time. Its a cath 22 no matter how you look at it form E*s standpont. They are leaders in technology, of course we will see some bugs. Combined tha everyone has different setups it is difficult to get everything correct.

enough of my rant

Actually you will be able to watch your external HD recordings on any 622 that is in your house, however you can not brinig your drive to a friends house and watch your recordings on their 622.

Each account will have a house key assigned to it that will allow this to happen.
