Tech Chat Recap May 14th

Actually you will be able to watch your external HD recordings on any 622 that is in your house, however you can not brinig your drive to a friends house and watch your recordings on their 622.

meaning i can watch ext HD recordings between 622s over the ethernet connection? or do i have to move the ext HD?

obviously, choice 1 is the best (by far).

sounds interesting, i'd really like to see this in action @ my house!

For now you need to moe the drive.

However HP was showing a device which would tie all your 622's together so all your recordgs would be available anywhere in your house.

What he meant to say was move the drive ;)
Moe/Move - it's sneaker net circa 1980, what the heck is the difference?

[clarifications:
1) I'm not angry at either of the messengers
2) what i need most is the ext HD
3) I've been able to server SD recordings for years between my ReplayTV boxes, so anything less is a letdown

As for the raysat, I see a definate use for it in my SUV with 3 tv's, I wonder if it is possible to use another 311 on the house account and use it in my truck for full progamming? Of course I would pay for the original receiver and a package but sometime its nice to just have all my programming that I have at home. Mark at Dish Depot told me that I will actually be able to make my unit and make my SUV a hotspot for wi fi, I am sure this added to the overall price but it is a nice addition if it is real.
I tried to cover the MobileDish and WildBlue segments as good as I could as I know there is interest in both...

And that's probably the rub. I seriously doubt Dish will enable USB unless they can maintain complete control over what's goes over it and where it goes.

Dish does nothing unless they can benefit ($$$$) from it. I fully expect a USB "enabling" fee will arise at some point, followed by a per-receiver surcharge. It sounds like the HP device would give more control to the customer - something Dish does not want.

The USB drive method you go to the 622, and move the recording from the 622 to the USB drive manually. Then move the USB drive to the destination VIP receiver and play it back.

The HP method, hook up via ethernet to the central raid server, copy to the server a program from a 622 and play back on any VIP via ethernet, no need to move the disk.

I expect the topic comes up during carriage negotiations and in that regard "E" might be forced to "care".

IIRC Comcast DVR's allow for external HDD download and have for quite a while. Do they have copy protection?? Why was it so easy for them to implement?
