Based on their recent Hopper fee increases, I can guarantee you it won't be free. I would even go as far to say it would be $7/Mo "because we can."

I can't say I would be surprised but I can't imagine it would be the same price. There is no equipment involved so I can't see why they would charge much.

New LG tv that does not require a Joey. Just got done hearing how this works. Pretty awesome feature. Surprised they didn't announce this during the keynote.

I reported that a long time ago, I have that app on my LG TV now. It works with either Hopper system.

The app was updated sometime ago since those pics. Much slicker interface now.

Since there is no equipment, I can see them charging for the app, but a monthly fee would be rather sad. But we all know that it will happen. I'm willing to bet it will be $7 too.

It's things like this that make people curse the FCC for not applying the standards for cable to all pay-tv providers (i.e. clear QAM (or the satco equivalent) and cable cards for equipment that would work with all providers).

The hopper system should be as follows...

1) pay for the hopper, that gives you 3 tuners to use as you see fit.
2) Lease a joey for the extra $7. You are renting equipment and not the ability to view a tuner already payed for, see (1) above.
3) if I own a implementable device, such as a TV, or remote viewing display such as a phone, tablet or computer, service is included on itunder the hopper fee.

Pretty simple.

Well, in a sense, this is like a built-in cable card for Dish, so I would hope that any monthly fee wouldn't be more than existing cable card rates ($3-$4).

Kind of like a cable card but there is nothing you need from dish other than the hopper connected to the Internet. The tv just needs the software and to be connected to the Internet.

While I can see your point, the TV will be replacing a Joey, completely. Do you really think that Dish will not seize the opportunity to charge a fee for that? Can anyone say "TV2 Connection Fee?"

... which would apply to phones, tablets and other mobile devices. There is no difference between the TV that can access a Hopper and the mobile device. How could they (in good conscious ) charge for the TV, but not a phone?

The answer... just wait and watch!

When I asked the guy he said he wasn't sure. I'm sure they're still mulling over what they can do with it. I would think they should get it out in the public to see how well it works before charging.

He also said they will make a bid on the NFL Sunday ticket. Either Dish wins the bid or the competitor pays a lot for Sunday ticket. So, basically he says they would only offer the cheapest bid and most likely wouldn't get it.

No... Sling doesn't provide an entire STB interface, or pristine TV2 viewing like a Joey/Smart TV.

This whole thing reminds me of a little over a year ago when people thought that the first Joey should be free.

So LG started this Smart TV Alliance and opened up their SDK for manufacturers last year. In theory, any manufacturer that supports it would be able to get the app. Phillips is the only one listed currently. LG also has GoogleTVs, but it's less likely those will be supported. Really though, the different SmartTV implementations are all that different. It shouldn't take much to make it work on other devices so long as the supported hardware is there.
