Hello,

Here is my situation. I am surrounded by mountains except to the east. the mountains rise up about 2k feet. I would like access to tv and internet i have measured it and i would use approx 3000' of cable. here is my question is this possible. and any idea how, and what equipment to use? will signal travel that far ? which sat service would majic jack work on? I am ready to move on this as I will moving there in about 6 months. any help is greatly appreciated.

3000 feet of cable?!?! No way, no how.

It may be easier and cheaper to go up instead of horizontally, by building a tower to mount the equipment on. However, most installers for satellite TV and internet will not have the necessary equipment to climb the tower, much less mount to it.

More important than the height of the mountains is the angle from your house to the peak of the mountains. What is that angle, and how far from your home are these mountains? Depending upon your new location, you may be able to get high enough to clear the minimum angle necessary to obtain a signal.

I didn't know Florida had mountains. What part of the state are you in?

You can't use line amps with satellite internet. So even with the best materials, max cable runs are typically limited to 300 feet. Don't know how many line amps it would take for satellite TV, but I'm sure that 3000' would make it a pretty expensive cable run. MagicJack has a disclaimer right on their website stating that it won't work over satellite.

The best post was from iwc5893 you would probably be better off not trying to run that much cable their are different types of cable that will do longer runs but those are costly solutions. I don't know of any coax cable capable of 3000 ft. So I would put that out and consider other options. Just my 2 cents worth!

You may want to run power up the hill to where you can get signal. That will probably be your only choice. You would then need to put a small shed/building up there to put your equipment in. I would put the dish and receiver up there then if you could somehow amplify the tv signal over that coax down the hill over the coax then that would be great. There should be a way to be able to turn the channel that far by insterting IR through the coax or by using slingbox if you can get internet down to your house as well. Maybe one can figure out a way to transmit the UHF signal that far down to the house to change channels with the remote as well?

You could also from up on top of that hill maybe find a wireless provider that you can get a signal from. If you can do that then you can have a radio that receives from the top of that hill then use another radio to transmit a signal down to your house. You could possibly receive with any wireless that you have at your house such as laptop or wireless card in a desktop or by using another radio at the bottom of the hill to receive the signal.

If you have to use satellite broadband at the top of that hill and then use a pair of radios to transmit the high speed internet to your house then the slingbox would not be an option due to bandwidth limits that satellite broadband has.
