It isn't illegal to activate the equipment. It is illegal to use the equipment to decode encrypted programming from DIRECTV, a provider not authorized/licensed to distribute programming in Canada.

No problems getting it across the border. Came home, set it up, called directv and a nice lady walked me through everything. Even showed me couple of the new genie features.

My google voice # is the # on my DTV account. It went seamless, she asked couple verification questions and went ahead an activated my receiver.

Hello, I've been using DirecTv in London, Ontario for one year now, no problems at all, I have a HD DVR, my question is if any of you guys that have Directv in Canada, do you have your equipment connected to the internet to receive On Demand?

There are several Canadian posters that have reported no issues being connected. Do a search and you should find some information.
