Statement from Dish Network on VOOM Takedown

I dropped Dish Network. After 10 years overall, and 2 years of subscribing to the HD Everything pack (currently well over $120 per month), I finally had enough.

I should have dropped them 2 years ago when their sports hit an all-time low when they stopped offering MLB Extra Innings. And of course YES never showed up.

The more comparison I did between Dish Network and Directv, the more I realized Directv was the better deal. Essentially I would be paying $2-$4 extra per month, but I would have so much more content at my disposal. So clearly this is the path I am looking to take, although I am taking my time looking for a deal.

As for Dish Network, I am tired of the false advertising, the unfulfilled promises, and the second rate cheapskate approach. They aren't saving anybody any money, based on package comparisons. I'll gladly pay an extra few bucks per month for better options and more content.

Does DirecTV have external hard drive feature? I am not switching from Dish because of Voom, though I will miss Monsters and FilmFest, but I really don't want to lose the 6 500gb hard drives (and growing) I have full of great HD content, and I don't really think the loss of 2 channels that I liked is enough to get me mad enough to switch. My service has been pretty good and overall I am satisfied. The only thing I really want to happen is my locals in HD for Duluth, MN, and it was highlighted on the map for this year. Hopefully soon.

I was just wondering if DirecTV had the external hard drive feature?

After talking to Charlie yesterday, I honestly believe he wants VOOM. He just does not want 15 channels of VOOM which show the same programming over and over again.
This mantra is just too overdone. As much as any of the Discovery, TLC group repeats over and over episodes this Voom gripe is more about a personnel problem. Bottom line wanting less choice of HD is a lack of commitment to consumers and providing a competitive product. Case in point WFN as some sort of substitute.

This I don't know, and I am sure someone else can answer. However the technology is certainly nothing special...it's just a USB connection out to an external HD. No big deal. So I would expect something like this would be standard in the near future whether you are using Dish Network equipment, Directv, cable dvr, or Tivo.

And I agree. The loss of a few channels was not enough to make me quit Dish Network. Rather it was the "tipping point" for me. There is far too much content which interests me, particularly sports, which everyone from Directv to cable carries. But Dish Network, with their stubbornness, always falls flat here. The "leader in sports programming," my butt.

It angers me that to this day in Charlie Chats, Ergen claims the most requested sport remains Cricket. That is the biggest stack of hooey I have ever smelled. I'll buy that it is possible overseas, but no way is it the most requested sport in the USA. No freaking way. There is a reason it is never on Sports Center, or discussed by sports talk shows. It's not popular here...not in the least. Never was, never will be. So E* carries Cricket, but not MLB Extra Innings. Yep, sounds like they are in tune with their customers' wants. Directv and Cable must laugh every time Ergen delivers Cricket to customers in lieu of popular US sports.

Baseball - look it up. Some people refer to it as "the national past time." I think there might even be a Hall of Fame or something up the road from me...

Thank you Scott for giving me some hope that we will get this back, lets just hope that Voom will stop being babies and let us have the 5 back.

For as many international channels that Dish carries and for the amount of people who subscribe to them, I can actually see that Cricket would be in high demand as well as football (as in soccer). There are more people subscribing to Dish than white, suburban couples with 2.5 kids and a dog in the back yard.

Scott later stated E*s opinion seemed to have changed and they did't want V* at all. It doesn't look good.

Hey, the man is consistent... He always "argued" in the past that "content" is what mattered. He didn't think adding a channel, HD or SD, just because it existed was justified. He wanted it to have good content first.

Like WFN?

I really, really miss my Monster HD and Rave HD. I would gladly give up all the so called "new" channels to have those two back.

I agree. If given a choice, I would give up those "so called" new HD channels to get VOOM back. With therapy I think I'll be able to survive without that fishing channel.

If there is more room on this band wagon, count me in.

Bring Back Voom!! Throw WFN back in the water where it belongs. :D

I know I'll get flamed, but I find it ironic. Before last week some folks were ready to sacrifice their first born to get new channels. They were threatening to go to D* who did not have Voom. Now they get them and now they are ready to sacrifice their first born because they took Voom away.

I was thinking the same thing. But I do want MonsterHD back.

Probably a different set of people. I wanted a few of the channels we got on monday (one in particular, really badly), but not at the expense of Voom. There are many who have been wanting exactly what happened to happen, and this bothers me cause i have never once thought that we should get rid of a channel that I dont watch, so that I could have one that I do watch. (and I hope what i said doesnt constitute a flame.)

And although not likely we're getting all 15 back, I sure do hope that the people who want specific Voom channels back, stick up for those who may want different Voom channels restored than the ones you want...else we're just as bad as those who wanted Voom pulled entirely to make room for what they want added.

I think we all were a little upset that there was no new HD comming in, we didnt know that we would get new Channels and Lose Voom. I mean for a day Dish had more HD than D* now they have to catch up again. I was always patient, I was happy with the channels I got I knew that its not easy to get new HD but I cant believe how easy it was to take away 15.

DVR problems with box 522.
