.....was not aware if anyone had seen this....this is very sad for Cardinals fans and my prayers go out to his family, friends, the Cardinals fans and the whole Cardinal organization.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Josh Hancock, a key member of the bullpen that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series last season, was killed in a car crash early Sunday.

The Cardinals said they were told of the 29-year-old reliever's death by the St. Louis Police Department. The team's home game against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night was postponed.

The team said the accident happened in St. Louis, but no other details were disclosed. The Cardinals and police are expected to make a statement this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Hancock has pitched for four major league clubs. He went 3-3 in 62 regular-season appearances for the Cardinals last season and pitched in three postseason games. He was 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in eight games this season.

Hancock joined the Cardinals before the 2006 season. He has pitched for Boston, Philadelphia and Cincinnati.

apperntly he hit a truck on the side of the highway that was pulled over to help a disabled car. i cant find out what time it happen. what i read just said last night. cards had a afternoon game so i wonder what time at night this happen. this is the second pitcher we have lost. ifr you remember 5? years ago our staff ace darren kyle died in his sleep. both deaths came when we were playing the cubs.

very, very sad news....remembered when he pitched for the reds. think he had a promising career but had a weight problem. they eventually cut him and he did well for the redbirds.

I don't remember him with the Reds. They were talking about him Sunday when the Reds were on TV, but for some reason I have no memory of him.

they got him from the phillies in the todd jones deal. he had a decent record in 2004....played an abbreviated sked in 2005 and was released i believe right before spring training last year.

I just read...and it maybe old news....but apprently this guy was SERIOUSLY drunk and marijuana in his system...AND just left one bar to go to another.....AND refused an offer from the bartender of a cab ride. I feel sorry for his friends and famly and the Cardinal organization...but has lost ALL sympathy from me. He could have killed some INNOCENT bystanders because of his stupidty....and you rest assured that having an IDIOT for a manager probably didn't help...him(as in LaRussa) "setting the example" and all early in the year when HE was drunk behind the wheel.....

I was thinking the same thing. This story could have been a lot worse and more tragic. Lets see, drunk, speeding, no seat belt, marijuana, talking on cell phone, going to another bar, his boss DUI. Theres a guy with a death wish and serious judgment issues. Thank goodness it was only himself.

gotta agree brewer. sounds like there are some serious issues in the cardinals organization that need addressing.

did anybody mention that hancock was involved in a minor accident (same svu) a few days before? and evidently he had been hitting the sauce fairly heavily!

St. Louis Cardinals have implemented a "no alcohol" beverage in the club house. It amazes me that all other clubs do not have a policy like this. What does alcohol and baseball have in common to tolerate alcohol in the club house?

I was always taugh that alcohol/tabacco do not mix well with sports and athletes yet clubs do not have a stronger policies against them in their club house (at least).

Wonder it hit has "hit home" with that idiot manager La Russa.....

I was never sure what the policy was in other organizations, but if you stop and think for a moment you will remember that until just a few years ago this was a team owned by a brewery. Just a few blocks from the stadium every other employee of the brewery had beer available in the lunch room. In Missouri, at least not that long ago, students were taught in drivers ed that the danger of drinking and driving had NOTHING to do with alcohol, it was simply that the act of drinking any liquid was a distraction from driving. Students were taught that drinking a beer was no more dangerous than drinking a can of soda. As opposed to other states I have lived in, it was not illegal to have an open container. A-B has a huge amount of political clout, and they have heavily influenced the laws concerning drinking and driving in Missouri (or lack thereof).

My co-worker is a relative of World Series game #1 winner Anthony Reyes of the Cards who I've met and is a great guy. When I first heard of the news that a Cardinals pitcher was killed I immediately went online to check who. It's just too bad that sometimes in life you don't get a second chance to correct a wrong as serious as this. Let's just hope some good will come out of this with future alcohol consumption policies after games.

Did not know he got drunk in the clubhouse. Seems to be classic over reaction to this. Instead of making the person responsible, we just play Big Brother and remove the alcohol. What's next...stadiums?

He made the wrong choice by driving while intoxicated. There is nothing wrong with having a few beers after the game. The owners would never remove alcohol from the stadiums, can you imagine how much they would lose at $8 a beer?
