Sources: Goodell determines Pats broke rules by taping Jets' signals

Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 (less than 25% of his salary) Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 (OMG chump change compared to what Kraft makes/yr) for spying on an opponent's defensive signals.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn't.

If they make the playoffs or win any rounds or SB their draft pick would be minimal quality at best. I would give all thak back to just have them banned from the playoffs for this and maybe next season; that would mean something.

Giving up 25% of ones salary is pretty big. Now its not much on the org but damn that would send a message to me. The draft picks especially the 1st round is a pretty serious penalty. I know you dont agree but its an interesting ruling.

ESPN poll so far shows majority think it was not harsh enough. Looks like a hard slap, but a slap on the wrist none the less.

Clayton in this case is dumb.

It shouldnt matter how many first round picks the Pats have. If the penalty for cheating was a 1st round pick then thats what it is.

What do you say..oh man that team is so good they have two picks we have to make the penalty more severe because they were that smart to stock pile picks?

So far Goodell has been one of the bright spots in sports. If only MLB had a guy like him at the helm.

THAT'S IT???!!! IF you hit a QB in the head with a helmet, you get AT LEAST a one game suspension....and here a guy BLANTANTLY CHEATED!!

Goodell said he considered a suspension, but he felt the draft choice penalty and the fines have a more lasting effect on the franchise. That's a fine premise, but spying affects the outcome of individual games. Taking Belichick out of one game could affect the Patriots' chances of making the playoffs. For example, he's still coaching Sunday's game against the Chargers, and if he wins, he will have a potential home field tie-breaker if the two teams finish with the same record.

Here's the problem with Goodell's decision. Whether by design or not, the Patriots had themselves covered for such a penalty because they are so good at what they do. They acquired the 49ers' first-round pick in a trade that enabled the 49ers to select Joe Staley. They have an additional third-round pick from the Raiders in a trade. They have enough draft choices to survive the loss of one first-round choice.

He should have been suspended AT LEAST 2games.

The Raiders are too smart though. The league is always one step behind their cheating, and makes rules to forbid it after the fact.

Boston, I'm with you. I too am getting sick about sports. Just think about what has transpired just the past few months: NBA officiating scandal, Mike Vick, steroids everywhere, etc...and now Spygate. Not much to be proud about lately. I've said this before, but it bears repeating: I used to read the sports section first every morning, because I wanted to read about man's accomplishments before I read about his failures in the front section. That difference has become severely blurred as of late.

I guarrentee the jets were doing the same thing too. Come on Eric Mangini was on the Pats so many years and was doing it too there. A few team also did it in preseason too, and that's why the whole league was warned.

Now if it was like the F1 racing fine for spying 100million dollars, I'm sure the Pats would of been looking for a new coach right now. 750,000 is easy money Mr Kraft will pay.
