Sony insists PS3 launch is on track
DECEMBER 13, 2005
SONY says it is on track to introduce its PlayStation 3 games console by the second quarter of 2006, despite speculation it could face delays.
The timing of the release has become a matter of speculation in the $US25 billion ($33 billion) video game sector and among studios, hardware makers and other companies trying to judge the battle over next-generation DVD technology.
A Sony spokesman says the company is still aiming to launch the PS3 in the first half of the year because it is important to maintain its lead in the games console market against Microsoft, which recently launched its Xbox 360 console.
Chief executive of top video game publisher Electronic Arts, Larry Probst, says Sony's console will not be available until later in the year.
The PS3 is central also to Sony's push on its Blu-ray next-generation DVD technology.
