So here's my situation, and I'd like some opinions on what you guys feel is the best way to move forward. Currently my grandfather has a 3-LNB dish with built in multi-switch and one single tuner non-DVR directv receiver. I'm going to be moving in with him and will definitely be upgrading the system. I currently have one HDTV and two SDTVs. I plan on adding at least one HDTV very soon. I want to get a DVR on each HDTV, and a regular tuner on the two SDTVs (non-DVR).

Here's the rub. Currently, the cable from the dish isn't buried. It was an install that got interrupted by us (not the installer's fault) and we've just left it unburied because it's relatively close to the house. It runs into a Primestar box that has been there forever with a grounding block which then goes to the living room. The rooms I want to install the new boxes in cannot be drilled through the floor, and the best option is going through the window with a flat coax cable (that's fine because the windows are very near the grounding block).

What I want to do, and you guys let me know what you think:

slimline dish with SWM lnb/switch built in. One coax to the grounding block, which I would replace with a 4-output SWM splitter. Run one line into each room, three of which would use flat coax through a window, and the other one is already run. Put the power inserter on the one that wouldn't use flat coax.

Questions:
What are the current deals for current customers that aren't under contract to get upgraded? Would it be better to upgrade a current account or sign up for new service and get everything we want that way?

Can we specify which dish to get? Can we at least specify that we want the swm setup, even if it isn't the one with the built in switch? Or, can we buy the SWM dish separately (I'm willing to pay for it) from weaknees and have the installer install that one instead of a non swm setup that directv might mandate? If I am able to do that, I would probably run & bury all the cables myself. I'm comfortable with all of the setup except setting up the dish itself. I do not have any meters, etc. and would rather have it peaked by an actual installer.

Other suggestions would be welcomed as well :)

If you are not a current DTV customer have your Dad cancel his account and get setup new in your name. It's the only way, cost effective way, you will be able to get the setup you need.

If you are not new I would still suggest using the account in your name and get a mover's connection (a lot of times they will throw you a discounted upgrade) and tell the CSR that you have SWM now and wish to have that mover's connection down with a SWM setup as well (she/he may not know what you are talking about or that you aren't supposed to have it already and will note the account to give you SWM). If they say no be prepared with whatever special Dish Network is running at the time and say they will do it for you if you switch to dish. That tends to open ears to your needs when they are not listenning.

I don't have a problem setting up a new account, but I want to make sure that when I call and order I can specify a SWM setup. For their sake, it will greatly simplify setup because most of the cabling will be run...all they will have to do is put the dish on the pole (already there) and connect the receivers.

Go with a local retailer then... if you do you will be able to talk to someone local who can tell you exactly if you are getting SWM automatically or what you can do to get it... a CSR for D* typically has to do what the computer says to do.

A secondary question..is the SWM switch weather proof? If I were to run a single coax to where the dish would be, can the switch be mounted on the pole? Currently there is a 4 port grounding block on the pole and then a grounding block on the box where it runs into the house.

Also, can I buy a SWM integrated dish myself and have it installed instead of the regular dish? Or would the installer balk when he got there and only install what he brings?

Call a local retailer and hash it out with them... likely you would be getting a SWM setup anyhow, but if they want to charge you an arm and a leg just try another retailer! (BTW, make sure to figure this out with them BEFORE they do your credit check... once they do the credit check and you pass they will hit the "continue" button on their screen and you will be their customer for 30 days and no other retailer can touch you)

Movin' in with Grandpa, huh? There's gotta be a good story behind that! I'm all ears... :D

Not really, he's getting pretty advanced in years and needs someone to help him out. He's still able to get out and drive and get around but needs someone to help him with bills and keeping his medication straight. I get a free place to live out of it, and it's just me and him and a decent sized house which he plans to leave to me. Might as well get moved in now!

Well that's not a bad deal at all!
