So is iPhone 4S capable of 4G or not?

It could be the last iPhone released for awhile as hardware wise what more can they ad?

NFC? HD radio? 16x9 screen?

As far as hardware goes it is almost the perfect phone. Sure some would like expandable data but I don't see that happening with the big cloud push. Others would want a replaceable battery which I agree with but apple rather sell you a new phone. ;(

That is the whole magic of Apple, they can always come up with something, and convince everyone that they must have it. Look at how long they have been doing it with the iPod...

Just curious. Wouldn't it be called iphone 6 now since the 4S was the fifth iphone?

Or it could just be called the iphone with no number.

But we had an iphone 3g then a 3GS and then a four. So % is logical.

Yep. Add one piece of tech at a time. Brilliant marketing but bad for consumers.

There are always innovations in cellphones. you have anmed a few things yourself but in 365 days there will likely be other things may consumers want.

My understanding is that Sprint no longer sells WiMax devices and is switching to LTE.

I just hope they don't call it "the iPhone" like the iPad3 (or iPad 2012) is called the "iPad." Stupid, and simply designed to confuse the consumer.

Apple-speak:

Yes, the technology was available but we didn't feel it was ready for consumers yet

;)

well as you can see from the thread more than a few consumers think the approach is grat. In fact you see it posted here that there is simply nothing left to add to their products. i don't share that view but clearly Apple is doing something right to elicit the type of comments they get.

They still sell WiMax phones that are in the pipes but they have halted the building of the WiMax network and all new phones will be LTE. They anticipate they will run out of WiMax phones at the end of 2012, and they have said they will continue to run the WiMax network until at least the beginning of 2015 to support those in contract with WiMax phones.

They don't run the WiMAX network. Clear runs the network. One thing about the LTE that Sprint is rolling out is that every tower will get LTE unlike VZW and ATT. Also Sprints LTE will be software upgradeable to LTE advanced unlike the other guys.

Ooookay.. And since Sprint owns Clearwire.... Who runs WiMax?

Sprint doesn't own Clear. They own part of it in stock but it's not the same company. Totally separate. I wish they would have just up and bought them a couple of years ago so they would have for them into the network vision plan.

When one company owns more than 50% of another, for all intents and purposes that company is owned by the majority shareholder. Up until last week, Sprint owned 54% of Clearwire. Due to the way a transaction was handled that stake is now technically 49%. So yes they are two separate companies.. But up until last week Sprint was calling the shots for them. I mustve missed the headline.

Do you have a cite for this? I'd like to know the source for information regarding the upgradability of Verizon's and AT&T's LTE networks. I know that AT&T plans for LTE Advanced deployment next year.

I was hoping someone could clarify whether the 4S is capable of 4G speeds or not. When you look at AT&T's website it list the 4S as a 4G phone. But according to apple's website it says it's capable of speeds at 14.4 Mbps. Isn't 4G much faster than that? Is there a difference in the 4S phones from Verizon and AT&T? I have a family member that just purchased a new 4S (AT&T) and it has 4G on the top left hand corner of the screen. Which compared to my iPhone 4 shows 3G (AT&T also) in the top left hand corner.

No. It's not "4G" by any stretch of the imagination. It has a partial HSPA+ 14.4 radio. HSPA+ isn't really 4G anyway, but 14.4 is the lowest type of HSPA+. The versions usually referred to as "4G" are HSPA+ 21 and 42. Really, LTE is the closest thing we have to the actual 4G standard. It's only one or two specs off from the real 4G standard.

As dangue pointed out, the standards organization has broadened the use of the term 4G to include LTE and HSPA+ as neither of them previously qualified. Deal with it...

Technically they didn't broaden anything. They simply stepped back because the carriers weren't complying anyway, so they just said "call it whatever you want." Basically, they gave up and just said "whatever."

Even if that's the case, then it's a failure on their part. By saying whatever, they left the consumer with zero protection from "false advertising" that this otherwise would have been.
