All,

We have patiently waited for Dish Network to get their legal issues with Tivo resolved so the SlingLoaded HD DVR VIP 922 would finally be released to their customers. In the meantime we continue the suffering, using several year old non-HD non-PVR equipment - and we are growing weary of waiting. :sob:

If anyone can give me even an inkling of when they think the SlingLoaded HD DVR VIP 922 might finally be released to market, I would appreciate hearing it. Otherwise, I guess my only option is to get a quote from DirecTV, who IS selling HD/PVR equipment, and move on down the road. Any thoughts from anyone? :D

Thanks,

Phil

There is a chance it could make it out by the Holidays... they have been pushing out beta releases like crazy over the past two weeks of the software and making great improvements.

I still would like to see them take their time and release it as bug free as possible and not rush it out. But I can't stop them and with the way the software updates have been coming they might meet their goal of getting it out this year.

FYI, E* is currently offering the VIP622, 722 and 722K. All are HD DVR's. Go to D* if you want but E* has the best lineup of HD DVR's.

I hope they wait also. I think they have made progress and the unit is getting better, but it's not ready today. There are still some features that need improvement or implemented.

Tivo issues have nothing to do with the 922. The 722K & 221/222K just came out this year. None of us here have been suffering.

Folks,

Thanks for the input. As for the "Tivo issues" not having anything to do with the delay; I'm kind of thinking District Court Judge David Folsom would disagree with that sentiment. He has held Dish very publically in contempt and the only issue now is how many millions, as in whether it will be tens or hundreds of millions, he is going to fine them. I figure Dish's lawyers have told them to hold off on release of any new devices that could further anger Judge Folsom. Every piece of equipment Dish has released predates his June contempt finding and they don't make oral arguments in their appeal until probably November at the earliest. I'll make the first taker a $50 wager Dish doesn't put the 922 out to general consumers until after their appeal is ruled on, which will be well past the holidays. Any takers? ;) Maybe we could start a pot, like a football pot, where we all get to put something down on the date the first consumer order is filled with the device? :haha

If it was just Beta testing of software refinements I would figure the Dish website would have some details on what to expect and a tentative roll out date. They obviously do not. Rather than reading "Tivo issues" are not creating the delay I was hoping someone had a rock solid release date, but I guess the only logical conclusion I can reach is to wait for the litigation to get resolved. :no

OK, so the 922 isn't perfect, Dish rolled it out a long time ago as far as showing it off, they just aren't selling it. As a consumer that means I will have to cobble together a replacement via their current PVR options and then buy extra hardware to get the SlingBox capability, or go with DirecTV. I will continue to mull this, but I do appreciate the feedback and I will also continue to hope for more.

Phil

Thanks for your explanation of the Tivo effect, Phil. Pretty obvious you have not kept up on current events.

The date is a month long? hmm Ill believe it when I see it Mr. Insider.

Insider info on 922? got to be kidding me, I called tonight and the guy had no clue but put me on hold and said he will talk to supervisor who told him it will be in December or February 2010. Now I have insider info tooo. Nobody really knows when the 922 is comin out. all I have is 7 months left on my 2yr contract sooo I can not wait for the 922 I might get it free since I will be out of commitment.

Get the 922 for free? Little bit of wishful thinking there bud. The 922 isn't a cheap unit and Dish is billing the thing as their flagship receiver. None of their flagship receivers have ever been cheap to begin with. Sure the price of them has come down as the receiver gets older as is typical with pretty much all tech. But if you want to be an early adopter my guess is that you're looking at a $100-$200 upgrade fee plus another two year commitment.

My understanding is that the TiVo ruling had to do with the older DVR [500 series and such]. That the main reason E* went to the ViP series is to not have any conflict w/ TiVo's patten.

BTW, I have heard rumors that the 922 costs between 1k-1.2k to buy outright...

of course it is free with a 2 yr commitment. The CSR told me and I have that recorded. With his voice and user ID or what ever number he said.

tlc1145,

Notwithstanding some of the thinly veiled insults hurled my way  the actual litigation was:

1 - Did E* violate patent? - Judge says yes.
2 - Did E* violate order to stop violating patent? - Judge says yes.
3 - How much is the fine for violating patent? - Judge says $104 million.
3 - How much is fine for violating injunction? - Judge says $200 million.

I have been following the matter very closely, all contrarian remarks aside, because it has been either curiously or coincidentally following the same trajectory as my interest in the 922. If it was not litigation related I am almost certain there would at least be a tentative date out there. No date on a beta testing product displayed at the CES months ago and talked about for well over a year; no tentative date or reservation for current customers or anything else - I believe that says litigation issues were the reason for the delay. That is my opinion and others can certainly disagree with it, but I do not think I am being disagreeable...

I have not seen anybody take me up on my wager offer so I guess the bottom line is this - Only the lawyers and E* executives know if they were delaying consumer sales of the device due to appeals regarding their loss at every level of this litigation. I have seen no credible date or credible indicator the delay was for any reason other than the ongoing litigation, so hopefully I am wrong and we will see this thing starting to get out to the consumers.

As far as I know, E* has never specified a firm date of when a new device would be available, especially never on their website. Heck, it doesn't even mention the ViP722k which has been out for months.

Other threads here speak of how bad the current software is, most likely actually making the thing work right is where the holdup is.

Pepper,

While I don't want to hijack my own thread  , my understanding is the 722 has a connection for over-the-air HD antenna connection and the 722k does not; what other differences are there?

Thanks,

Phil

Skyking - the release of the 922 has nothing to do with the lawsuit. The 722k has an OTA module. And you are not listening to what others are posting here.

Are you aware of the aspect of the lawsuit that identifies the specific models of receiver from Dish that were of concern? If not, you may want to freshen up on that first.

Guesswork and assumptions are not the answer here.

VIP 722k louder than 612

HGTV and FOOD HD dead?
