Hello,

I recently bought a house, and moved the DirecTV setup I had along and did a self-install as to not extend my contract. The setup is a 5LNB Slimline with a wing dish for 72.5, connected to a SWM-8 and run into the house. Signals on all satellites except for 119 are in the mid to high 90s. However, in clear weather, the signals on 119 are low to mid 70s.

There are some trees which could possibly be causing this, but, I want to make sure that my thinking is correct: it's not possible to have great signals on all satellites except for 119 without an obstruction, right? I don't have a problem getting the trees trimmed, but I'd like to make sure I'm not doing anything rash that I don't have to.

We did follow the instructional videos on Solid Signal's website, which were very viewer friendly. We just were not able to peak 119 above mid 70s. The same equipment was able to get signals in the 90s on 119 at my old apartment.

EDIT: Is the low signal on 119 even a big deal for my location? Lyngsat shows that my locals are on 72.5, which would make sense because of the wing dish. Does that mean all that's coming in over 119 is guide information? I don't subscribe to the international/spanish programming. The only reason I'm asking is that a couple nights ago my locals were pretty painful to watch because of signal issues, but now I'm wondering if it was an issue with the link between the stations and DirecTV. Looked almost exactly like DirecTV was getting the channels to uplink OTA, and their antenna was having some low signal issues..

If you are in a 72.5 market your locals are now coming from the99/103, so you should not need the 72.5 dish, unless you have non HD equipment. As far as the 119 you have no programming on that so it does not matter. Only problem you may have is a 920 OSD. Just change your sat setup to the kaku3 setting.

WRONG answer - that still will NOT work properly if you really DO have a SL5 LNB, due to the guide info coming in on 119, & the way the LNB is configured. The sub WILL start having guide problems, particularly on DVR boxes.

OP - since you already are using an SWM 8, you have 3 choices:

- trim the trees

- change the SL5 LNB to an SL3, which will still work with your SWM8 switch.

- ditch the SWM8 & SL5 LNB altogether, & change the LNB to an SWiM3 LNB. This way, you only need ONE coax out of the dish, & you're actually simplifying your install. The SWiM3 LNB's are pretty cheap now - check them out on e-bay. (make sure you do get the PI-21 power supply to go with it, as the one you have with your SWM8 will not work properly; it's a higher voltage than the PI-21) You will NOT be able to use your 72.5 obviously in this setup, but since your locals are all duplicated in MPEG4, it shouldn't matter. (unless you are using SD receivers, which would have to be replaced with MPEG4 boxes)

I agree with dishrich, just changing the setup does nothing you will still get the 920 error code, it is very rare but possible that the LNB is bad, but i would recommend trying everything else before you come to that resolution, ditch the SL5 LNB and get a SWM3
