You have to have a house phone to upload. If you are thinking about satellite internet go with Hughes or Wildblue.

Duh! If satellite service is down from solar or terrestrial weather issues, their satellite is going to be down, too. So then a phone line to upload with no download capability is more reliable? And $44 per month for 400 Kbps upload and 28.8 Kbps up (typical rural phone line max speed) is more economical than $49.95 for 500 Kbps down and 128 Kbps up (WildBlue Value Pak)? If you're counting your pennies that closely, no internet at all is even more economical.

Satellites are really designed to broadcast and not receive information from small transmitters.

Duh! Satellites do whatever they're designed to do. If you really want to get technical, phone lines with analog switching equipment are not really designed to carry data traffic. That's why they do it so slowly.

I didn't know these satellite download with phone line upload companies were still around. I don't think I would buy their stock . . .

They were begging me on the phone to sell their service. They said credit card or checking account was required along with a minimum purchase to start. I told them no thanks. If they want my business bad enough they will do better than that. Wireless internet is making its way into my area (going to have two providers) unless something goes wrong. The satellite internet will not have a chance after that point.

Satellite internet for residential will have no chance. Businesses who network all of there stores together will still be strong. It is the only way they can.

Well, satellite internet (2 way satellite) competes really well against dial-up. For about the cost of a land phone line & dial-up service you can have 10x faster internet via satellite. And it works just about everywhere; I've done WildBlue installs on properties living "off the grid" - electricity generated only via solar and/or wind.

I'm not sure what wireless services are coming to your area, but here satellite is comparable in initial & monthly costs and speed to the wireless service offered by the local electric co-op. And you need to be within 10 miles with a clear line of sight to their towers - pretty limited range for a county of 6,200 sq. miles.

I always thought satellite internet had no chance of competing against DSL or cable. But I did a WB install that took a DSL customer from the local tepehone co-op. He was 6+ miles away from the telco equipment and the DSL service was just too unstable, dropping to under dial-up speed 80% of the time. The customer is thrilled with satellite internet reliability & speed. And on a WB customer forum a user had WildBlue service installed to remove his cable internet because the cable company had ticked him off so much. I hope I don't digress to much, but a funny story: His initial post was that he had really liked satellite internet at first but was going to cancel because they restricted his speed because he had exceeded his monthly FAP download limit within the first week and he said that was impossible. Turned out that after installation he switched the service over to a wireless router with absolutely no security implemented. A neighbor's teenager figured it out, tapped into his wide open wireless network and had been merrily downloading music & movies. Note: If you're going to use a wireless home network, figure out how to turn on WEP security as a minimum.

Anyway, if faster, cheaper internet service other than satellite is available in your area, go for it. But there's a lot of square miles in the U.S. that is just too far away from wireless, DSL & cable, and satellite internet will not only be around for a long time, but will continue to grow and improve.

When you can get wireless internet for the same cost as one way broadband satellite then there is no chance that it would make it (SkyWay) unless you wanted to travel with your satellite and get internet access assuming you have dialup wherever you go.

The wireless internet would have better ping results, you can get cheaper phone service on it, and it would be a lot better at playing games. Also the weather would not interfere with it.

Skyway usa is a joke. I ve had it now for over 7 mths and nothing but problems, 3 LNB's to SW-10 modems that smell burned or used. Teriiible customer support . if you are smart you WONT get involed with this company, Im gonna drink some beers with my 12 mths is up.

Dude you should easily be able to get out of the contract early. they more than likley breached it a few times over. Take a look and also lookat item #9 on the dispute form of your cc bill it states "unsatisfactoy service dispute" just document the emails they did not respond to note the miultiple weeks of downtime and lack of credit extended in a letter then get ready to
send it in then call micheal the owner at skyway and ask him for a quid pro quo, he will let you out of the contract, but like me you now own some junky metalic artwork. I wish you the best of luck and curses on the jerks at skyway especialy that idiot woman chastity in billing.
