The List: Five greatest comebacks in sports history

The BoSox engineered one of the great comebacks last night.
Last night, the Red Sox pulled off a miracle, staving off elimination and coming back from seven runs down to beat the Rays, 8-7, and extend the series another game. It was baseball's biggest postseason comeback since 1929, but how does it stack up the other dramatic comebacks across sports? Here's our list of the five greatest comebacks in sports history.

1. Red Sox defeat Rays, Game 5, 2008 ALCS: I'll say it: Last night's victory was the greatest comeback of all-time. After being pummeled by a combined 22-5 in the previous two games and being down 7-0 in Game 5, the Red Sox rallied for eight runs in the final three innings to win a thriller at Fenway. Will it spark the Sox to another World Series? Stay tuned...

2. Celtics defeat Lakers, Game 4, 2008 NBA Finals: The Celtics and Lakers added another chapter to their storied rivalry with this incredible game. Boston trailed by 24 in the second quarter and 20 midway through the third when Doc Rivers' squad awoke from the dead and closed the period on a 21-3 run. The clutch play continued in the fourth and Ray Allen's sweeping layup past Sasha Vucavic with 16 seconds left gave the C's a 97-91 victory -- the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history.

3. Bills defeat Oilers, 1993 AFC wild card: There is nothing like an NFL game where the backup quarterback becomes a hero. This was the case in 1993, when Frank Reich started for an injured Jim Kelly and helped rally the Bills from a 35-3 third quarter deficit. Houston won the overtime coin toss but Warren Moon threw an interception and Steve Christie's 32-yard field goal gave Buffalo a 41-38 victory, completing the largest comeback in NFL history.

4. Kings defeat Oilers, Game 3, 1982 Smythe Division semifinals: Any comeback that has a name deserves a spot on the list -- and "The Miracle on Manchester" is no exception. Wayne Gretzky's Oilers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two periods and appeared to be on their way to a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. But the Kings miraculously scored five third-period goals, including the game-tying score with five seconds left. In overtime, winger Daryl Evans blasted a slapper past Grant Fuhr to complete the comeback and the Kings would go on to win the series.

5. Celtics defeat Nets, Game 3, 2002 Eastern Conference finals: The Celtics were down and out in this one, but outscored the Nets 41-16 in the final quarter on their way to a 94-90 win. The victory was sparked by Paul Pierce's 19 fourth quarter points and an impassioned speech by team captain Antoine Walker during a second-half timeout. Unfortunately, the win did not give Boston the momentum it wanted, as the Nets came back to win the next three games and earn a berth in the NBA Finals.

Which other great comebacks did we overlook?

You forgot the second-biggest NFL playoff comeback:

Giants/49ers in the Wild Card playoffs in 2002-03.

The last great moment for the Niners. San Fran has never been any good since.

I would say #3 on that list was the best ever. Frank Reich was a backup that nobody had ever heard of. He starts the game and does nothing and then comes alive. That in my book is the greatest comeback.

+1 :up. You have to remember, in football you're always against a clock. Obviously, that isn't the case in baseball.

yourbeliefs,

do you think I was right when I said this was the last great 49er moments?

From 'The Catch' to that comeback, the 49ers were THE NINERS over a ridiculously awesome 20-year stretch.

The 2002 Giants/49ers Playoff game was on NFL Network today. Yeah, it was a great game if your a 49ers fan but as a Giants fan that I am it wasn't.

I'm a little surprised that there are 2 games from 2008. You mean to tell me that there were not any games from the past they could've used? They had to use games from just this past year, this past week?
