Shows on EHD are erased after watching! Known problem?

I have an external drive rack that supports 15 removable external drives (and counting). Some new. Some old. Everything from an ancient 40GB generic drive to what I would call a more modern 750GB drive. Most are IDE some are SATA.

I have never lost a single event with my rig.

I'm wondering if the reported loses are more driven by the choice of EHD hardware as opposed to concept.

Give us some pix and more info, please.

Pics? I suppose. But it is a simple drive enclosure. It supports IDE and SATA. Not sure why pics are necessary.

We all realize that only one EHD can be supported at a time. In my case all of my EHD's remain powered down sitting on a self unless I choose to use one.

SATA drives in the top bay. IDE drives in the bottom bay. SATA to USB converter for the top bay. IDE to USB converter for the bottom bay.

The top SATA bay simply requires bare drives. Seen to the left. The IDE drive bay requires drive trays. Seen to the right.

Considering this is a well known bug on here, I don't understand why anyone watches shows from their EHD anymore. Just transfer it to the DVR and watch normally. It doesn't take that long to transfer a show back and forth.
Since seeing this thread, I've been doing the same thing. I lost one movie by accident, but was lucky enough to find it playing a short time later.

A movie is usually transferred in 10-15 minutes, depending on file size. I just have to make sure I hit the transfer button before making the popcorn, and it's usually ready for viewing when I need it.

For those of us making an archive, it means transferring each way or twice as long. If we could copy it would halve this time and be a lot safer. Transferring 2 throw-away programs and then ending them may help but still keeps you on edge waiting for the same-day viewing of an "irreplaceable" one to disappear--next day ones are always vulnerable. Some recordings have not been shown again in 2 year or not in HD of small size and non-commercial. (Some VOOM MPEG-2 720p(?) recordings are still smaller than current MPEG-4 ones or are just not available in HD, especially Monsters, Kung Fu, and World Cinema.)

No, I don't want to or can't reboot on each viewing--I'm recording something else. Nonsense.

Having to transfer the program I want to watch to the IHD before I can watch it, then put it back afterwards is absurd. It wasn't necessary to do that before L625, so why should it be necessary now?

Dish tech needs to get their act together and fix the damn bug!

workaround: n, a plan or method to circumvent a problem (as in computer software) without eliminating it.

I agree that it obviously HAS to be fixed ASAP, but at least there is something we can do in the meantime....

My understanding is that you can turn the receiver off - not reboot - to stop the playback and keep the system from deleting the recording.

I've done this many times on normal - not EHD - recordings that I started to watch while it was recording. When I tried to change channels it then gave a message that I would stop the recording if I continued. Turning the receiver off got me away from this situation and didn't interupt the recording being made. Maybe this would work with the EHD problem.

I so totally agree. This is a feature that you PAID for.

The notion that you should have to transfer back and forth is ludacris.

I know what a workaround is...I use one (the second program sacrifice), but it's still an annoying issue, having to keep recording "Nothing But Trailers" programs and putting them out on my EHDs in order to have some fodder to throw to the bug.

My point is: this wasn't happening prior to January and here we are, in April now. If it took me that long to fix a bug in a program, I'd have been fired a month ago! So, what's Dish's excuse? Real crappy, fourth-rate programmers/code jockeys?

Not even the method of moving recordings to the internal drive, watching them there, then returning them back to the external?? What goes wrong with this method??

Yes, of course restoring to the HD works, that is the method that I use now. What I meant was that the 'other' workarounds such as entering a channel number, rebooting, 2nd show sacrifice, etc, do not work for me 100% of the time.

Restoring to the HD, watching it, then archiving back to the EHD is an unacceptable workaround...If you do that then what is the purpose of having the EHD in the first place? might as well just leave it on the internal HD!!!

Which is why I keep harping on this issue... With the various workarounds, all of which are problematic and not 100% reliable, Dish has left us with an essentially unreliable and risky feature that we've all paid extra to use and that's now almost unusable because of it's unreliability.

Nearly 4 months now that they've known about this issue and what's the "official" workaround? Reboot after every EHD-viewed program...and even that isn't 100% foolproof!

If we had to reboot our computers after every program we ran, would Microsoft be the company it is today? (not that I have any great love for Microsoft either...)

The only reason this issue isn't raising a huge storm is that it 1) doesn't affect every Dish sub and 2) we subs that use it aren't paying a monthly fee for the "feature". If we were paying a monthly fee for the ability to achieve and view from the EHDs, we'd all be screaming at them to get this fixed, and we wouldn't be 4 months into this mess. Dish can (essentially) ignore it because not everyone is reporting/telling them about it and since it's not considered a "critical function" by them, they'll get to when they feel like it...

I'm still not seeing it.

I haven't lost a single recording from my EHD (s). And I have tried to force a failure.

I guess it depends on the combination of the EHD and the STB. Maybe not.

If I see a failure I will of course comment.

So what is your magical "combination of the EHD and the STB?"
-Ken

Sorry but I have no magical advice. My comments are very simple. I have never lost a title on an EHD.

I have never even thought about specific button presses on the remote in order to avoid a problem - which does not exist for me.

I am not alleging that the problem does not exist for others. But rather that the problem has not reared its ugly head for me.
