Hey guys, just a heads up on things. As you know a major hurricane is headed for the Texas Area. SatelliteGuys server are located in Texas, however they are in Dallas which is not expected to get much of the storm.

However if Dallas does get hit and the power goes off at our ISP they have generators and can power things for up to 2 days. However with that said they have no control over the outside connectivity, so if part of the internet backbone goes down it is out of our hands.

We have made emergency backups of our sites from all 3 of our servers "just in case" and I will perform another backup our of database and main satelliteguys site again tonight.

If for some reason we go down, don't panic, we will be back.

To all of those in the areas which are going to get hit by this storm, godspeed to you, please take care of yourself and your family. We want to see you here when everything is over.

They are projecting it to still be a category 1 hurricane when it hits us here in Big D.

Definately Godspeed to everyone that will be affected.

On kind of a related note, here is a profile on EV1Servers and their preparation for Rita. They are located in Houston and are the 8th largest hosting sites in the world with over a million hostnames and 642k active sites. They don't host this site, but just something to see about what they are doing.

When it works, MGNO.com also hosts a blog from one of the guys in charge of keeping DirectNIC up an running while Katrina blew into NO.

Just an idea...

Scott,

You might want to look at some of the server hosts located in Colorado. We recently moved all of our VAX and AS400 servers from Atlanta to there. The price difference was minimal, believe it or not. Then again the company could be taking care of 25,000+ patients at any given time. I guess satellite information isn't quite as important, but don't try telling the members. :)

Seconding what questic said, Colorado was one of the sites our company looked at for a hot site/DR, but we ended up going with a Dallas location. It remains to be seen if our choice will turn out to be a case of the Primary Site becoming the DR site for the DR site...

Our prayers are with the people in Rita's path.
