SD Slot & Removable Batery Discussion

I see comments in phone-specific threads, and thought maybe we should have a more general look at the two camps.

SD Slots:
yea, it sounds like a good idea, and user friendly.
But the manufacturers see if as a way to charge $100 for each step up.
If the base size phone memory became 32GB instead of 16GB, would people still bitch?
(probably)
So, I try to live within my 16gb, and surprise, I can!
But some just never run out of desire for more pictures, more games, more videos, or more music.
They fill up 64gb, and cry for more.

Removable Battery:
there are two different reasons, but mostly folks invoke the silly one.
That has to do with replacing the cell at end of life.
I've put new batteries in iPhones; it's a $10 part and a 5 minute job.
Surely, someone will do it for you for $20 while you wait.
So in that case it's an invalid concern.

The more realistic problem, is swapping the battery during your work day.
If that is the case, you have a valid problem.
There are portable & car chargers, and even pre-charged external cells to provide solution.
Newer phones often have better power management, too.

Well, those are some of my thoughts.

The average person will NOT take their phone apart to replace a battery. Plus, for iPhone owners, how many have the required pentalobe screwdrivers ? I don't know what's involved in replacing a battery on phones like the HTC One or newer Motorola Droids. Just checked on the HTC One - same as the iPhone, IMO. The average person will NOT go that extent to replace the battery.

Show someplace that will do the job for $20 too. I see one place online that charges $40. Local places often charge more too (plus I question their experience and how well they can do the job).

true, not for everybody

Linuxman had his iphone home button replaced by a local for $20, a few months ago (St Louis).
The guy came by and did it while he waited.
Advertised in the local Craigslist or something similar.
That's a two-dozen-screw job I wouldn't do for less than $50.

On an iPhone 4 (and maybe 5), the battery is about 4 screws.

Easy to find a repair video on YouTube, and parts on Amazon.
Think I paid $5 for a 3GS and $7.50 for iPhone 4 batteries, -shipped-!
Those weren't the cheapest places; I tried to buy from reputable suppliers.

We all put batteries into our remotes and cordless phones because we know how.
Still, I'll bet there are those in the house who would prefer someone else do it.
Same goes for clocks and watches.
Knowledge is power. Become indispensable.
